From the stories I've heard from podcasts Jim Cornette was baffled that Vince fukked this situation up and Jim was sitting in the Gorilla Position in front of a monitor so he could see what Vince decided to do... once Bret got screwed Cornette immediately was like

Breh I know about all the backstage shyt and politics. whatever. As an 11 year old, that dude could do no wrong in my eyes and that DX shyt was perfect for an 11 or 12 year old. Shawn was already my favorite at the time but that shyt put him way over the top. Sometimes it's a blow the number of matches we missed with him in 98 and 99 and 2000, but if he didn't get hurt at the rumble, I really don't think he'd be alive today
