UK rapper Nines has been jailed for two years after admitting that he tried to import £280,000 worth of cannabis into the country.

The musician, real name Courtney Leon Freckleton, 31, of Barbican, London, was sentenced today at Harrow Crown Court following his arrest in June for conspiracy to import cannabis and conspiracy to supply cocaine.

He had been arrested following an investigation connected to a number of properties across the capital and Hertfordshire.

He admitted to conspiracy to import cannabis and money laundering in August, but denied the charge of conspiracy to supply cannabis and cocaine.

Those charges were later dropped by the CPS and no further action was taken on them.

Nines, who is a father of two, was sentenced today alongside co-conspirator and business partner, Jason Thompson, 35, of Barnet, north London.

Thompson pleaded guilty to the same charges as Nines and was also jailed for 28 months.

Nines, who is well known for writing the entrance music for boxer Anthony Joshua, helped import 28kg of cannabis - worth £280k - into the UK from Poland and Spain, using Bitcoin to close the deals.

Nines was once on the path to great success, landing a number one in the album charts for his record Crabs In A Bucket.

Since landing on the music scene in 2017, he's won two MOBO awards for Album of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Act.

He also dabbled in filmmaking, released a short movie called Crop Circles alongside an album of the same name in 2018.

Before that, the rapper went through a difficult childhood, suffering the trauma of his brother being murdered.

He's previously been jailed for 18 months for possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Mitigating, his defence said he was "deeply ashamed" that he had let people down and spoke of his "great heart" which he said was evident through the work he's done in the community in Brent and across London with young people.

The judge said that some of his character references where "some of the best" they had ever read.

Hopefully he comes home and focuses…Wasted talent stuck in scrubs like the judge said.
