Michael Pachter said it basically when mobile gaming reaches a level that the hardware can produce graphics that rival what's on consoles. you'll just Bluetooth or whatever sync your phone to your TV or use an HDMI cable and use Bluetooth controllers.
i'd liken it to the PlayStation Vita type experience on the go but with the ability to plug it up to a TV (which they intentionally left out of the Vita) and play at home. its almost like the SEGA Nomad becoming feasible.
i honestly believe this will be the last conventional generation of game consoles. Nvidia is seriously trying to push mobile gaming to an acceptable graphical level and AMD is doing combo cpu /gpu chips that are in the next console generation's hardware.
Honestly Nintendo should have pushed for this. the 3DS or whatever coming with a small base station that connects to the TV (has some hardware in it like the rumored Xbox attachment for the Durango) and syncs with the unit Wirelessly giving you a TV screen and making the actual 3DS what the Wii U Gamepad is now.
