But they’re fewer opportunities. And a lot of Principal engineers clearing close to a million per year, that ain’t HF money, but for every HF guy there are a a few dozen principal engineers.

I think just the hope of getting into the top tier of Finance is what gets kids in the door for IB even if they get in and realize there aren't enough spaces

I know why they’re going, but the banks have been loud and clear that for the past decade they can’t recruit at the same clip that they used to, more kids are opting for tech. Even in top MBA programs consulting and finance are losing a lot of candidates to tech

If you had a choice between wearing a suit and having to wake up at 6:00 AM in bum-ass New York dodging homeless people and living in a shack working for some idiot boomer or wearing your pajamas and living anywhere in California the choice is clear. :banderas:

im a software engineer at all of them. its a high demand for senior level engineers. i can get work done pretty quickly and learn things pretty fast. hardest part is organizing meetings. work day is around 7AM - 2PM

i will clear about 40k before taxes in april. not doing it for long tho.

Engineers getting that guap :wow:

not sure why a kid today would choose investment banking over being an engineer

long term career ops for bulge bracket IB >>> tech engineer.

Unless they a genius and make their own startup but that obvi an outlier

edit: you’re right tho “traditional” IB talent has gone to tech.

The optionality of the exit ops from IB though :yeshrug:

What specifically are you doing as an engineer, like are you working on front end, backend, or database or is it a little bit of everything

faang work like balance sucks tho

apple is the only cool faang company. great remote work, compensation and worklife balance. google sucks for wfh and amazon and facebook are like sweatshops. netflix seems shaky as a company right now imo

:mjlol: @ the bolded. That's part of the reason I didn't bother interviewing with either company during my most recent job search.

To my knowledge, even Apple seems to vary dramatically from team to team and they're requiring hybrid work, so they don't seem any better than Google in that regard. But outside of the worst of the worst tech companies, you'd likely have better work-life balance on average than being in investment banking. And there's tech companies outside the FAANG companies that offer similar comp where the work-life balance is a lot more ideal.

Can somebody explain what investment banking is

Investment banking is the “premier” finance job.

There are multiple components to it but the biggest would be M&A (mergers and acquisitions) / advisory.

If company A wants to buy company B comp. A doesn’t go directly to comp B at first or at all.

they go to an IB(investment bank) who then leads the transactions/ compile financials forecast/research, ect. They also might even provide the financing.

If a company wants to sell bonds (debt) then the IB will provide the services to do so and the same for any stock offerings or an IPO.

in laments terms they are the middle men and arms dealers for most major financial transactions between companies and even governments.
