To Help Retain Engineers, Apple Gives $100K-$200K Bonuses

Apple is paying six-figure "special retention grants" to a handful of hardware and software engineers. Protocol reports:
The bonuses, anonymous sources told Bloomberg, are worth between $100,000 and more than $200,000 in restricted stock units that vest over several years, providing another incentive for engineers to stay at Apple... The bonuses show the level of insecurity that some of the top-paying companies in the industry feel in this tight market for tech talent. (Even Google employees are feeling unhappy with their compensation....) Apple and other tech giants are throwing more and more money at employees to retain them.

In the last few months, Alphabet has adopted a new cash bonus plan that allows employee bonuses "of nearly any size for nearly any reason," The Wall Street Journal reported last month, and Amazon has raised its cash-pay cap from $160,000 to $350,000, according to The New York Times.

Engineers getting that guap :wow:

not sure why a kid today would choose investment banking over being an engineer
investment banking provides far, far higher ceiling and their bonuses are insane. a dude I know was getting over 400k around 5 years after undergrad doing investment banking for goldman sachs

most engineers that aren't branching into executive part arent seeing THAT kind of guap

I don’t know, these FAANG/top startup engineers pulling in 300k at the five year mark thanks to stock appreciation and 15-20% bonuses and they work fewer hours/have better work life balance and better perks

Also while obviously investment banking work/life balance might as well be called killing your body rapidly...I feel like engineer work/life balance has definitely gone towards work lately. But I'm prolly biased ass I had to work a lot harder and longer hours last few years. This devops shyt is a scam :francis:

I’m not sure if I wanted to go into software sitting at a desk looking at code all fukking day I wanted to work with the environment and infrastructure,
But it’s crazy to hear about software engineers getting paid 6 figures right out of college

This. An engineer with 4 - 5+ years of experience can easily pull 300k - 400k+ in total comp at a FAANG company. And even if you can't land a position at a FAANG company, there's quite a few other companies that offer similar comp.

For those who aren't familiar with just how much software engineers can make, check out levels.fyi

Here's the average total comp for an E5 software engineer at Facebook, which is definitely a possible role for someone with 5 years of experience.

I could be wrong, but I think it's more the bolded than a universal trend for software engineers as a whole. I've been an iOS engineer for a few years now and on the whole, my work-life balance has been pretty good overall.

But it definitely varies from company to company though. My last job was at a company that leaned a lot more towards the "work" in work-life balance. It shows in their products and it's the main reason why I ended up only giving them a few days notice before I dipped :mjlol:

But at my job before that and my current job, it's the exact opposite :ehh:

faang work like balance sucks tho

apple is the only cool faang company. great remote work, compensation and worklife balance. google sucks for wfh and amazon and facebook are like sweatshops. netflix seems shaky as a company right now imo
