They were criminals before the show existed. The show just worked with the law enforcement agencies to get their point of view. Chris Hanson (not Chris Matthews) never really humiliated them directly. He always talked to them in a straight-forward manner. They humiliated themselves.

The real entertainment value came when they saw Chris Hanson walk out and they recognized him from previous "To Catch a Predator" episodes.
