What about for a heavier person?

How heavy?

What are you looking to get out running?

There's a crawl, walk, run phase with everything.

A person who lifts weights didn't start at 225lbs.

Most likely at 135lbs and worked their way up.

The treadmill is a great starter though. It softens the impact and the atmosphere of having others around you can keep you motivated. If you've never done any type of running that's a great place to start.

For someone looking to get off the treadmill, I would recommend running 3 times a week and sustain that for at least 1 month. That will give you 12 scheduled runs on top off whatever else training you do. Depending on how many miles you can run without discomfort I'd recommend 2-3 miles at a time.

This will give you a good indicator of how much you can run without falling apart. Again doing too much causes injuries.

6'1, 300. Athletic big boy build. Trying to drop more weight and improve cardio health (basically to get out of the weight room/elliptical routine).

I did some running a couple of years ago, but I think I took years off my lower back by doing so.

Honestly I didn't have that problem, switched from running in loads of different shoes/boots straight to barefoot and had no problems injury wise. :manny:

Definitely need proper running shoes though.

Same here. I can run in any shoe but I've found some shoes to be more effective than others. I own two pairs of the Mizuno Wave Universes. The lightest shoe on the market. Lighter than Vibrams Five Fingers. Literally like wearing socks.

These are my race day shoes for 8k's and 5k's but I would never do a 10K or longer in them because it's painful. That's what I was getting at when it comes to shoes. I wouldn't want dude hopping in Five Fingers or equivalent because I've seen too many get injured.

Hit the treadmill for a couple of months. My honest opinion is you are carrying a lot of weight to be "pounding pavement". It would only lead to an injury thus slowing down progress.

Hit the treadmill. That's the safest thing for you with a prior lower back injury. Do it for a couple months like OP, to where your comfortable running/walking 3 miles.

DON'T BE ASHAMED TO GO SLOW. Even at my level I have to tell myself this. Run within yourself. If you are hurting, stop. But know the difference between hurt and tired. Since you bench I know that won't be a problem for you.

Monitor your diet(clean it up). Once you drop the weight and get into it, your diet will clean itself. That's the beautiful thing about running. You can't run after eating spicy wings and drinking a pepsi. You will feel like shh, so your training will force the diet on you.

I've been running outside since the start of the year but shin splits r killin me. I can't run 2 days in a row cause of em (sometimes I have to take 2 days off). I come from a running background (track & cros country in hs, cross country in college) but rarely ever got them. Got some asics running shoes, guess its cause the extra weight I put on.

I run a lot....here is some advice

Veggie juice before runs

Never drink or eat protein before runs, no homo you will get the shyts

try some new balance running shoes I buy mine at Sports Authority for $40 dollars

run up hills even though it sucks it will build endurance ten fold.

Try doing to runs a day morning 5:30 am or 6:00 am and a light night jog 6:30 or 7:00

For people carrying more LBS, it's the best bet till the weight comes off. You also have to think in this current heat.

weight + heat + walking/running = danger

Indeed, I think I have a mental block on it. All that movement and stuck in the same place.

I do some treadmill running, but all the treadmills at my gym feel like the belt is "slipping"

Is there a way around this?
