Thoughts on Bel Air? Is this a fair assessment?

We all know the budget on this series was hot garbage.

So because of that you get a bunch of broke inexperienced producers (Will Smith was probably barely involved in the day to day) pass down weak material to a room full of inexperienced writers.
  • They update every character to get them 'better represent today' (gay)
  • They give everyone a critical flaw (coke, infidelity, crooked)
And the reason they chose those specific flaws is because the hottest show on TV right now for their targeted demographic is Euphoria. And NBC wants their own Euphoria.

This show was never going to get green lit as a carbon copy dramatized version of the 90s.

Edit: if they had $$$$$$$$$ and experience they wouldn't have had to go this far for cheap conflict, which is why those stereotypes/tropes are there (conflict is what every screenplay is built on). Carlton being on coke is easy material to generate conflict. Infidelity causes marital conflict and will eventually come to a head. Being a dirty politician will eventually result in getting caught. It's like the bomb under the table that no one knows about but the audience. All cheap story devices.

Man 100% of what you're saying is wrong:mjlol:

This is not a low budget show. It looks high quality. They spent money on this. Other than Insecure there hasn't been a show with a predominantly black cast photographed so well.

This show is NOTHING like Euphoria, not at all. No one who watched both shows would say that. Euphoria barely has a story it's just a bunch of broken people. No one on Bel Air is remotely like that. No one has a "critical flaw."

Carlton is not on coke and he was doing great until Will showed up.

Uncle Phil is NOT dirty. He pulled strings to save his nephew. Other than that he still embodies the same character traits of the original.

Aunt Viv is not cheating on Uncle Phil.

I'm not going to speak on Ashley because it's a spoiler but her being gay isn't totally correct.

You're going off assumptions not evidence.

isn't it about a kid from west philly that gets into trouble & moves to Bel Air with his rich Aunt & fam ?
:yeshrug:

:yeshrug:

so, your saying Black people wouldnt have supported a completely new show ?

Show should have just been called something else
So they basically Belly 2’d us? (Don’t even ask me how).

Used the name of a classic and basically shyt all over it? Nah, I’m good. There’s reason why I haven’t really committed to any series in over a decade. They’ve always got to shoe horn some gay agenda shyt into every show.

Tired of this shyt. I get dysfunction sells but don’t desecrate a show like Bel Air just to get views. Will Smith signed off on this too… SMH.

The show was always intended to be an update of the Fresh Prince. They didn't set out to make a black show and then looke Will Smith saw the original parody/short/trailer on Youtube and reached out to the creator.

The reason it's so different from the original is because this is what happens to every project. It gets updated and upgraded for the times. Most people's beef is that it was done in cheap ways.

If the creator of the trailer owned the idea they probably would have bought it and fired him. That's what always happens in Hollywood. 'Story by' seldom ends up as 'Written By'.

Since he didn't own the idea (the IP is not original) they kept him on to help develop the series and get him paid...as more of a symbolic gesture. But I bet he had very little say.

Morgan Cooper who did the YouTube trailer, actually directed the series pilot so he had more say than just “symbolic”
