The Lead up to the Match wit RVD at ONS was a Good Heel Opportunity too
The two times they could have easily pulled the trigger on a Cena heel turn would have been Summerslam 2010 and the angle with Ryder (Rise above hate thing) in 2012.
Naw I'm good I don't want this wigger again
I feel like Cena turning heel against The Rock would have made perfect sense. And it would have worked both years.
2012: One of the biggest matches in Cena's career, arguably the biggest. Beating The Rock in the main event of WrestleMania is as big as any other accomplishment. Cena knows that nobody remembers second place, and he's desperate to win this match so he cheats.
2013: Cena lost the original match. Went on to have the "worst" year of his career. Wins the Royal Rumble and after finally beating CM Punk, gets another shot at The Rock with the WWE Championship on the line. This is even more critical than the first time, because Cena refuses to accept another loss so he turns heel.
WWE News: John Cena almost turned heel in 2012Ex-WWE writer Kevin Eck discussed how the creative almost got approval from Vince McMahon to turn Cena heel in 2012. He was quoted as saying the following:
“We were very close. We had Vince sign off on it at one point and Cena was on board to do it.
We started making plans for it and then Vince got cold feet “. He further added, “we had signed an exclusive Cena merchandise deal with Walmart”.
Eck stated that the main reason for Cena not turning heel was because Vince McMahon felt that they didn’t have anyone to replace Cena. Punk was over with the fans back then but according to Eck, McMahon felt that he wasn’t the right replacement.
Randy Orton was another big Superstar but due to his hatred for fans, he wasn’t considered as well.
Sheamus was rising at that time and Eck said that there were serious efforts put in to make Sheamus the next top babyface at one point but the booking decisions taken by Vince McMahon did little to help the cause.
I think the Punk feud was the perfect time. He could have had a Hollywood Rock-style turn where he shytted on the fans for turning on him. It would have made perfect sense from a reasoning stand point.I feel like Cena turning heel against The Rock would have made perfect sense. And it would have worked both years.

Why would he go back to that as a heel
He’d likely just be arrogant Hollywood mega star version of himself
And they chose to turn RybackThe night after mania 29 was about as good an opportunity as it gets.
It would've done huge numbers for the company. Cena has the mic skills to come off as a legit heel, but there was no way Vince was going to pass up on all the money Cena was making for him as a face.
I agree with this. I'm pretty sure Reigns is still one of the top in merchandise sales and he's their top heel. That merch shyt always sounded like a cop out to me. Cena probably would have done the same or maybe even more. Somebody mentioned it earlier but putting Cena with McMahon would have been big heat lol but they missed the boat like usual lol
