I see the deliberately obtuse posts in here. It’s cool. I expected it. I guess half of the other people on social media and other message boards, must wear tin foil hats too since they made similar observations.
I see what you are saying but I think we can clarify.
I don't think many BM, OP included, would have problem with this image in a normal society. Black societies have many times embraced women leaders not only here but back in many parts of Africa where there was no beef with women inheriting property, ruling, etc. As a default I am fine with Black women leaders.
OP's point though is people juelzing in this thread about this cover out of context. The Black family has been in the cross hairs for a while. Earl Ofari Hutchison wrote the Assasination of the Black Male Image almost 30 years back and it still rings true. People don't realize a lot of "liberals" and "conservatives" think it is fine to revile young Black males but if they like Black women and older Black people it can't be racist because they don't hate all Blacks equally. I have actually read this argument in major newspapers.
I am not into gender wars--Black men and women are digging our own grave if we publicly air our dirty laundry and stay at each other's throats--but I noticed the definite change in tone over the last decade. The turning point when I noticed something was different was the Roy Moore election in Alabama. After his defeat there was this whole narrative about how Black women were the reason for victory. Of course he wouldn't have been defeated without Black women votes, that isn't completely wrong, but it's not like Black men didn't overwhelmingly vote against him either. Even if Black male turnout was less, if we would have stayed home there would be a pedo senator (likely not the first) from Alabama right now. Not a peep about how White and Hispanic men and women voted for him in large numbers. The rest of this society outside of Black America is going farther and farther right wing yet Black men are being set up to be blamed for any electoral loss to the GOP. Mark my word, in the elections this fall when Democrats lose close races there will be grumbling about how we didn't vote more--ignoring young White turnout is atrocious as well. Then there is the almost compulsion to show young Black women without a Black male partner in advertising and entertainment over the last decade or so. I am concerned if my daughter will grow up watching TV shows that scream "Black men are not options for smart girls".
A lot of people do not understand the difference between the Black community doing a better job at empowering and elevating our women, which needs to be done, and "empowering" Black women in a way that suggests their true elevation can only come despite of, or against, Black men. If the latter narrative wasn't taking legs so much in the 21st century, only tin foil idiots would care about this cover.
