ANDRE BERTO EXCITED FOR SEPTEMBER 6 RETURN: "I'M READY TO GO OUT THERE AND PUT ON A SHOW"
By Press Release | August 28, 2014

Former two-time welterweight world champion Andre Berto (Winter Haven, Fla.) and his team are preparing to close training camp on Monday and head to Cincinnati for his 2014 debut. The 30-year-old will take on Steve Upsher Chambers (Philadelphia, Pa.) in welterweight action in his first bout since suffering a significant shoulder injury in his last outing on July 27, 2013.

Berto will return to the ring on the eve of his 31st birthday and the 2004 Haitian Olympian plans to show boxing fans what they've been missing in his absence.

"The shoulder is feeling good and we've had a tremendous camp. I was able to get out here really early for this fight and train with all the great champions in our gym. I'm just excited to get back under the lights and perform on September 6," Berto said.

As one of several champions in Virgil Hunter's gym, Berto has enjoyed the chance to train alongside boxing stars Andre Ward, Abner Mares, Alfredo Angulo and Amir Khan.

The Bay Area facility is the boxing version of the United Nations with five 2004 Olympians from four different countries (United States, Mexico, Haiti and Great Britain) training there. Berto his been ringside for some of his stable mates' bouts over the last several months and attending those fights has certainly driven his desire to step back through the ropes.

"It was good to be able to be there to support those guys. I learned something from each one of them. Now it's my turn and I'm ready to go out there and put on a show in Cincinnati," Berto said.

Berto and his team will travel to Cincinnati on Tuesday to finalize preparations for the SHOWTIME tripleheader at U.S. Bank Arena.

Tickets, priced at $128, $78, $53 and $28, are on sale now and are available by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets will also be available at the U.S. Bank Arena Box Office.

The current "Great White Hype" Chris Algieri says Emmanuel Taylor could upset Broner:

Adrien Broner will be heavy favorite heading into his upcoming fight against Emmanuel Taylor on Sept. 6 at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

But while Broner is the more recognizable fighter among the two, reigning WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri believes that Taylor has what it takes to score an upset.

In an interview with BoxingScene, Algieri, who scored a hard-earned unanimous decision win against Taylor earlier this year, said that 23-year-old, who has an 18-2 record with 12 knockouts, can defeat Broner if he comes in prepared to follow his game plan.

"Manny is a great fighter but so is Adrien. Adrien is a hell of a fighter. I think if Manny goes out there and uses his jab, he can make this a very interesting fight. He is that good. If he goes out there and doesn't use his jab, I think Broner could pick him apart. I really think it's a pick'em fight, It could go either way," said Algieri, who is set to face Manny Pacquiao on November 22.

Taylor, who is coming off a big win against Karim Mayfield in July, recently vowed to train harder than ever, saying that the upcoming fight is the biggest of his career and he won't let the opportunity to make a noise slip away from his hands.

"This is the biggest fight of my career, and I won't let it get away from me," Taylor said. "All of those hours in the gym were for a moment like this, and I can't wait to show the world what I can do in the ring."

Matthysse, Abregu Having Wars in The Gym
Posted by: Boxing Photos on 8/28/2014

Argentinian fighters Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 33KOs) and Luis Carlos Abregu (36-1, 29KOs) held nothing back during sparring sessions to prepare for their upcoming fights. Lucas will have a difficult bout against WBC silver super lightweight champion Roberto "Masssa" Ortiz on September 6th , while Luis is fighting on November 22 in Macau against an opponent yet to be named.

The representative of Abregu, Pablo Martinez said: "They are having hard sparring sessions, and that's very useful for the fight that Carlos will have in Macau."

Both have been working for several days together in a gym in the town of Junin.

"My mind is totally concentrated on Ortiz and I'm not thinking about any other challenge. I must be fully focused on this match. Each challenge is different, but I always only concentrate on my current opponent. The rest will follow later," Lucas methodically explained.

OBSERVE AND FIGHT: IS ADRIEN BRONER BOXING'S "PROBLEM" OR BOXING'S SOLUTION?

Is Adrien Broner boxing's "Problem" or boxing's solution? Nobody is quite sure how Broner will rebound after his career was derailed at the hands of Marcos Maidana last December. Yes, he easily defeated Carlos Molina in May, but that was against a lightweight fighter who was coming off the bench after a long layoff. Broner is full of confidence, and his post-fight interview after the Molina win was no exception as he upset the entire nation of Mexico (even though Broner's comments didn't seem that big of a deal to me). However, Broner has been relatively quiet (except for the clothes he wears) since that Maidana loss. He immediately requested a Maidana rematch but was probably talked into slowing things down and taking an easier comeback fight against Molina. Broner has never wavered in saying he wants the Maidana rematch, but his fight this weekend at 140 pounds is a sign that he may be slowing things down a bit and taking a smarter approach to his career rather than jumping back up to welterweight. "The Problem" is a big personality. Some people love him. More people hate him. However, all fight fans want to watch him fight. Sound familiar? That's what people used to say, and still say, about Floyd Mayweather. Broner's talent is unquestioned. His chin is very strong. His power is strong as well. Broner is only 25 years old. He has plenty of time to rebuild his legacy. He doesn't need to stop being fresh, fly, and flashy. He just needs to know when to do it and when to tone it down. Right now, it seems Broner is doing the smart thing and taking things a bit more slowly during the rebuilding process. He isn't saying much, and that could spell bad news for Emmanuel Taylor on Saturday night. Broner can take his career in many directions, but one thing is for sure; he has the appeal to be the boxing's future problem or boxing's future solution.

Emmanuel Taylor is going to be no walk in the park for Broner. Don't let Taylor's 18-2 record fool you. He lost a split decision to Pernice Brewer, and he lost a unanimous decision to WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri, the man who faces Manny Pacquiao in November. He holds wins over Karim Mayfield, Victor Cayo, and Raymond Serrano. This guy can fight. I expect Broner to win, but Broner will need to be more active than normal because Taylor is coming to win. Broner isn't getting a cupcake fight, even though most people don't know Taylor's name. Don't expect a knockout from Broner because Taylor is tough. If Broner can knock Taylor out, I would be extremely impressed. This is a strong homecoming fight for Broner because this fight will be very entertaining to watch.

Lucas Matthysse vs. Roberto Ortiz as a co-feature could be another Fight of the Year candidate! Matthysse has already been involved in one Fight of the Year candidate this year against John Molina, and this fight shouldn't go the distance based on each fighter's propensity to go for the knockout. This fight should get the fans nice and riled up for the Broner main event.

I'm also interested to see how Andre Berto looks in his return. Berto faces Steven Upsher Chambers, brother of former heavyweight title challenger Eddie Chambers. Chambers is quick, but not quicker than Berto. Chambers has no power, so Berto doesn't need to worry about that. Expect Berto to start slow, but pick things up and go for the knockout in the middle rounds against Chambers, who has only fought twice in the last two years.

TERRELL GAUSHA: "I HAVE JUST BEEN PUTTING IN WORK AND I'M READY TO PUT ON A SHOW"
By Percy Crawford | September 02, 2014

PC: You're returning to the ring on the Broner/Taylor card. How do you feel, man?

TG: Ah man, I'm excited. It's in Cincinnati and that's close to home. I'm an Ohio boy, so I'm excited. I'm going to have a lot of people come out there. It's exciting to be on a card with Adrien Broner, Raynell, and all my boys. I have just been putting in work and I'm ready to put on a show out there.

PC: Do you ever put any pressure on yourself when you are fighting close to home like this?

TG: I really don't even look at it like that because you always wanna fight close to home. Once you're in that ring, it's just you and that person. You know you want to look good, but I wouldn't say it's pressure. It's just more about having support to turn up for and they give me that extra push.

PC: You have been real impressive lately. Do you feel like you are becoming a complete fighter now?

TG: Yeah, with time, I feel like I am developing my skills and learning a lot every time I step in the ring. Early on, I was just trying to find myself. I feel like I am developing and getting better each fight.

PC: Are you still out in California training, and if so, what has the work been like out there?

TG: Yeah, I actually live out here now, so I train out here full time. We work hard, we got great sparring, and I'm just staying at it. I haven't took no breaks, just after the fights, I'll take the weekends off and Monday, I'm back at the gym.

PC: You have had 4 fights in 2014. That's a lot of work, man. Do you like being this active or are you getting a little burned out?

TG: I like the activity really. I feel like if I have a tough fight where I feel as though my opponent gave me a good fight and it went the distance or something, then I would take some time, but right now, my last fight was a 1st round knockout, so as of now, I'm young, I'm feeling good, and I be ready to just hop back in there.

PC: You have already gone a full 10 rounds. What was that experience like for you?

TG: It was a good experience because I always wanted to see how it feels if I ever had to go the distance. You know we always want the knockout, but I was thinking in my mind that it will be somebody that can go the distance and I knew I would have to be in shape. So I wanted to see how it was and I felt good. I felt like I was in good shape and after the fight, I felt I could've went 2 more rounds. That was a good experience for me, being young in my career and being able to go 10.

PC: You have fought a lot of guys with both winning records and a ton of experience. Is that by design? Do you want to test yourself every time out?

TG: Yeah, I want a challenge. That's what I got in this game for. I want to fight people that will give me a challenge along the way. But with that being said, you gotta be smart at the same time. I want to fight exciting fights for the fans and give them what they wanna see, but I'm trying to climb up that ladder and you can't do that not fighting stiff opposition. You want to step it up gradually though, so we not gonna rush it, but we not gonna move too slow either.

PC: With the exception of the guys at the top, the middleweight division is wide open. Is that still the division where you wanna make your mark at or are you considering another weight class?

TG: I see a lot of competition there in the middleweight division, but I'm actually trying to get to 154 where there is also great competition. My next fight will actually be my first fight at 154. I've been working towards that, but we working anywhere between 154 and 160; we good. I just want to be able to let my body make 154 and I want to be a world champion in different weight classes and that's what we working on.

PC: Has it been difficult coming down to 54 or is doing it relatively easy for you?

TG: I'm feeling more comfortable now, but I'm not gonna lie, in the beginning, it was a little tough. But as I change my diet and my lifestyle, and since I been staying consistent with it, its been pretty easy. I'm walking around at a decent weight. My weight is not too far off right now. I feel good to tell you the truth, but in the beginning, it was kind of tough though.

PC: Like I mentioned already, you fought four times this year and Saturday will be your fifth fight of the year. How many more times would you like to go after that?

TG: Hopefully two more times or something like that. I'm trying to close it out with a bang. I want to get two more fights this year after this one and look forward to 2015 and do bigger and better things and get bigger fights.

PC: What is the biggest difference for you being on the west coast as opposed to the midwest?

TG: I'm gonna tell you, I think it's just the ability to stay focused. I got a good team out here and it's a lot of good work here. I'm able to stay motivated and get out of my comfort zone a little bit. There is a lot of motivation out here and that keeps me on my A game and I'm just staying focused, man.

PC: Best of luck on Saturday night and I look forward to speaking to you afterward. Is there anything else you want to say before I let you go?

TG: Nah, I'm good with that. We can close it out like that bruh.
