I forget which cartoon I watched as a kid (I think Superman) where he threw some android/cyborg villain into the depths of the ocean... nikka was still alive but walking at the bottom of the sea because he was too heavy to swim.. I just thought that I would be terrified doing that in cold silent darkness even if I couldn't die.

shyt the depth of some of those lakes had me bugging. I've been to Lake Michigan and Superior numerous times and they're no joke, but Lake Baikal makes them like mud puddles

This actually a cool twist in the OG X-Com games from the 90s. In the second game the aliens are actually from the bottom of the ocean, when you defeat the aliens in the 1st one it woke them up from a millions of years sleep.

Life at the bottom of the oceans gets HUGE as an evolutionary advantage. Since food is so scarce down there, the only way organisms can ensure they don't become prey is to become the top predator, or, grow so large nothing affects them.​
