There's really no such thing as video game journalism. What you're calling that exist solely because of video game companies advertising budgets and marketing departments. Many of these guys get their games from those companies and agree to their embargos and NDAs. They're just another form of paid advertising. The publications they write for exist almost solely because of gaming companies and gaming related products advertising in them. Even YouTubers who are given free copies of games, to me that's all marketing and advertising.

It's like anything now,you just gotta find someone who's tastes align with yours that you trust and follow them.

Usually a sports journalist works for a outlet with more interest than just sports. There's always going to be conflicts of interest but video game journalist entire existence is a conflict of interest. If you find out about some super secret project and go public with it the publisher could blacklist you and damage your standing. They fly you out and let you see games and give you advance copies of them and make you sign agreements saying what you will and won't do and or say about them.

A video game journalist exist as a calculated part of gaming companies marketing and usually they agree to the terms the marketers set. You can learn more about the going ons of the industry reading the first page of NeoGAF than you can from some of these supposed journalist.
