This is extremely premature, but if Sam Darnold and the Vikings play this well for the rest of the season, what will they do with JJ Mccarthy?

Let's say the Vikings make a deep playoff run and Sam Darnold has an all-pro/MVP type season what do the Vikings do with their rookie qb next year? :patrice:

They would probably sit him for another year. McCarthy is still cheap and Darnold is still young enough that he could be the franchise quarterback. I think he was born in 1997.

Yeah Darnold is only 27. I don’t think they (or anyone really) expected him to look like a future franchise cornerstone player.

I’d say consider trading JJ while his name is still relevant if is still like this by week 12/13. But you also won’t find a decent backup QB cheaper than him.

I mean I guess if Darnold’s that good then just let JJ sit on the bench and develop a few years and then you have your next franchise QB:manny:

Honestly this is a good question. If Darnold is on a one year deal you probably have to move on. If it’s a multi year, then JJ might have to start next season as the back up

If his contract isn't causing cap issues, he's not causing any locker room issues behind the scenes and they're not offered a deal that's too good to justify passing up on, there's no point in trading him just to do it.

He's obviously not playing this year but beyond that, Darnold could end up being a one year wonder, he may want too much on his next contract, he may get hurt, etc. Football too unpredictable to make an unnecessary gamble

Rookie contract is 4 years, so you sit JJ for another year and franchise Darnold for ~$42M. If Darnold wants a big deal or they can't work the franchise tag number under the cap then you let him walk and roll with the belief that tall McVay is good enough to coach JJ up.
Nah you don't franchise him, you'd be bidding against yourself. Other teams aren't dumb enough to poach him, this is the only situation he's been in as a competent QB. You give him what you think he's worth as an offer, somewhere hovering around sub ~20 M and he can take it or leave it

Franchise him and trade him if he dont want the deal.

it reminds me of when Brees was on the Chargers and they went 12-4 with Rivers as his back up who was the franchise QB in waiting. The Chargers franchised Brees and he started the next season. They went 9-7 and Brees had a terrible shoulder injury on the last day of the season. He left as a free agent to New Orleans.

You cant really do that. You're not gonna know how JJ recovers from surgery until damn near training camp.
