Speaking of, I bet the tension Japan experiences from China is reflected in their current currency woes. I can't remember the last time I heard economic news out of Japan, but you're probably aware that this was the perennial problem when they first started flooding our ports with cheap cars. And then when Korea took center stage there was a cycle with them, and now China is playing currency warfare.
We do it too, and people here gripe when the dollar falls, but farmers sell more grain, and even our industry gains from it. If you check the annual trade reports lately you'd be surprised how huge our own exports actually are now. And we play the other side of the fence too, involving ourselves in commodities not nearly as important to common Americans as to foreign consumers (here I'm thinking about our role in negotiating the price of rice). So it's a two way street.
Anyway, babbling, but back to Japan. They have created a wealthy spoiled class like ours. Something crazy is happening to Japanese culture, I hadn't heard the particular freaky stuff you mentioned about the chick shaving her head, and I couldn't speculate as to how it ties to their GNP haha but it reminds me of our own culture going from mostly industry then to services, then having to farm out services to places like India where labor is practically free. So when the society drops back from backbreaking menial labor, it seems to lose it's grip and the elite that's created seem to get soft and lazy. But I think we have always thought of them as weird people anyway, especially when they adopted an almost religious attitude toward work and they all came across like factory robots.
