Established in the 1970s, Scared Straight programs are used throughout the United States as a means of deterring juvenile crime. They usually entail visits by at-risk youth to adult prisons, where youth hear about the harsh reality of prison life from inmates. The programs can involve tours of the facility, living the life of a prisoner for a full day, aggressive "in-your-face" presentations by inmates, and one-on-one counseling. However well intentioned these prison-visit programs may be, decades of research have shown that this approach is not only ineffective, but possibly harmful to youth.
A study by Anthony Petrosino and researchers at the Campbell Collaboration analyzed results from nine Scared Straight programs and found that such programs generally increased crime up to 28 percent in the experimental group when compared to a no-treatment control group. In another analysis of juvenile prevention and treatment programs, Mark Lipsey of the Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies found that youth who participate in Scared Straight and other similar deterrence programs have higher recidivism rates than youth in control groups.1 And a report presented in 1997 to the U.S. Congress reviewed more than 500 crime prevention evaluations and placed Scared Straight programs in the "what does not work" category. Despite these findings, Scared Straight programs continue to be used throughout the United States and abroad.

On January 13, 2011, A&E Television Networks aired the first of a multiepisode series of reality shows called "Beyond Scared Straight." The original, award-winning documentary, "Scared Straight," aired in 1978. The A&E series elicited a strong response from the juvenile justice field and the U.S. Department of Justice. In an op-ed piece published January 31, 2011, in The Baltimore Sun, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs Laurie O. Robinson and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Acting Administrator Jeff Slowikowski discussed how the use of Scared Straight programs to prevent delinquency is ineffective and can harm youth.
The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974, as amended, prohibits court-involved youth from being detained, confined, or otherwise having contact with adult inmates in jails and prisons. In keeping with the Act, and supported by research, OJJDP does not fund Scared Straight programs, and cites such programs as potential violations of federal law.

OJJDP News @ a Glance - March/April 2011

Actually, I remember the jail deputies had to put up this curtain when they had to take booking photos and fingerprints of juvenile arrestees at the adult jail. Of course, the adults never had access to get to the children since there were deputies and cops around, but they were following a law that the children weren't allowed to see the adults. After the kid got booked, they were escorted out of the jail and to either juvenile intake or released on a summons to their parents.

You ever see or talk to that joint again @ProBlack Panther

One time. I mean we had spoken after the incident of course. She wrote me all the time n sh!t. But it was only once that I actually ever saw her again after that(thank god).

It was about a year after I got out (she had moved). She was back in town and was round the way visiting her peeps or whatever.

I was just walking down the block and looked to the left and down the cross street and BOOM she was sitting right there, on the steps at her peeps crib.
We both had the :dwillhuh: face for a second, but then I just kept it moving, shaking my head n sh!t. Wanted to turn around and I know she wanted me to but :manny:

Who else better to talk to these lil nikkas than those of us that done actually walked the path they're on right now :mindblown:

They keep getting these college kids who're straight from under mommy n daddy's roof and have zero life experience in them streets to mentor the youth out here in the local hoods :mindblown: and it's no wonder they aren't getting anywhere with them :mindblown:

They cant relate to that struggle, out here feeding these lil cats a bunch of PC cliches and twitter-logic-posing-as-"WISDOM".

If you havent lived that life you cant tell nobody how to avoid it. :pacspit:

I got ONE felony and it's non-violent non sexual, none of the shyt you'd be like :whoa: to regarding mentoring teens from the hood.

What the fukk gives :mindblown:

They were one of the first orgs I tried. It was so long ago when I tried them, though. I barely even remember what exactly happened; I probably didn't get a reply from them or something.
Things may be different now, though.. will probably look into them again :manny:

Where in NC are you at? How can I sign up to mentor?

I'm in Durham, NC. If you're in college they have a plethora of organizations that you can start at.

If not, try the local churches and such, YMCAs, etc. At the very least they will point to other leads like they did me.

It didn't help me much but then again my situation is a little different. Go for it.
