Oakland Raiders

The Raiders have put the pieces together on the offensive side of the ball, with a very good line in front of the emerging Derek Carr, and the focus has been on defense thus far in the 2016 draft. On Friday, they added a pair of defensive lineman who were both rated higher on my board than where they landed. Jihad Ward was a first-round sleeper who they bagged at No. 44, and Shilique Calhoun is a player I, at one time, thought of as a likely first-round player, and they got him at No. 75. The defensive line now looks quite formidable. Reggie McKenzie is on a good run.

Paul Gutierrez gave the 2nd round pick a thumbs down:

44 (13). Oakland Raiders
Jihad Ward, DE, Illinois | Highlights

The Raiders, already having drafted a safety in the first round in Karl Josephwho is recuperating from a knee injury, selected a defensive end who, according to ESPN NFL draft insider Adam Schefter, might need arthroscopic knee surgery that would sideline him six weeks. At least the season does not begin for another four-plus months. Plus, he played DE in Illinois’ 3-4 defense, while the Raiders’ base defense is a 4-3, though coach Jack Del Rio said the defense will be interchangeable this season. Thumbs down. -- Paul Gutierrez

Raiders stay defensive with selection of Michigan State DE/OLB Shilique Calhoun in third round

The Oakland Raiders used both of their Day 2 draft picks on defensive linemen, so surely the health of defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. (neck) factored in? “No,” said coach Jack Del Rio. Still, after Oakland took Michigan State'sShilique Calhoun with the 75th overall pick, it is the first time since 2005 the Raiders have drafted defensive players in the first three rounds.

My take: Many observers were actually more impressed with the Raiders’ third-round selection of Calhoun than with second-rounder Jihad Ward. And for good reason. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Calhoun, whom Del Rio sees as more of a defensive end/Sam linebacker, had 27 career sacks at Michigan State, including 10.5 last season. “He’s a very productive young man, really understands how to rush the quarterback,” Del Rio said. “He’s been an All-American and he’s been a very productive guy at a good college program. We feel good about fortifying the front. That’s what we were able to do today -- add strength and depth and competition to the front.”

Can you ever have enough pass-rushers? No ... or at least that’s the Raiders’ thought process. Beyond drafting Calhoun and Ward, Oakland returns All-Pro Khalil Mack, potentially Edwards, and Shelby Harris on the line and Mack (yes, he was All-Pro at both DE and OLB) and newly signed Bruce Irvin at linebacker. “It wasn't like we orchestrated to come out with that being the case,” Del Rio said. “We have a lot of areas where we feel like we can strengthen, add competition to the roster, add depth and it just worked out that way.”

Calhoun sees himself as being a “versatile player. I can play multiple positions. I definitely do believe that the Sam works for me. If you want to put my hands in the dirt, that also works. I think that I can play multiple roles and that I can contribute to the team in many different ways. If he wants to put me at tailback, I can also play a little tailback as well.”

He was joking. We think.

Experience counts: Calhoun, who graduated with a degree in criminal justice, was a three-time All-Big Ten selection. His 27 career sacks were second-most in school history and his 26 sacks over his final three seasons are tied for the most in the FBS over that time.

Still, he knows he can learn from the likes of Mack, Irvin and Aldon Smith, whose suspension runs into November.

“Three guys, three premier guys that have a lot of talent and also have a lot of knowledge,” Calhoun said. “I look forward to coming in, learning from those guys, just trying to soak it all in like a sponge and definitely trying to go out there and compete. I definitely want to be on that field in any way that I can. So hopefully I can learn something from those guys, add it to my game and then attribute it onto the field and make plays and make it so our pass-rushing corps is dominant.”

What’s next: Barring any trades, the Raiders have five selections Saturday: a fourth-rounder (No. 114 overall), two fifth-rounders (Nos. 143 and 154), one in the sixth round (No. 194) and one in the seventh (No. 234).
