It's not necessarily meant to stand as it's own, traditional film experience. It's reliant on a decade of universe building and the development of these heroes. Thanos gets his story here, but we already know these other characters.

I'm hard-pressed to find another series, or film, like it.

But the entire superhero genre is Action mixed with Science Fiction.
