The Jets signed Matt Flynn after Rex Grossman turned them down, Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN.com tweets. Meanwhile, Grossman is drawing interest from the Falcons.

We heard last week that Grossman is dealing with an injury he suffered during his training andwill need a few weeks to get ready for live action. The former Bears signal caller was linked to the Jets shortly after Geno Smith‘s jaw was broken and it would seem that he was one of the top options – or perhaps the top option – for Gang Green.

Alas, the University of Florida product won’t be coming to New York and he could instead pop up in Atlanta. At present, the Falcons have T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree backing up Matt Ryan.

Grossman, 35 on Sunday, last appeared in the NFL in 2013 with Washington, though he did not see any time on the field. His last season under center was all the way back in 2011 when he started 13 games in D.C., throwing for 3,151 yards with 16 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. The veteran is known for his proclivity for throwing the deep ball, which has led to a great deal of turnovers in the past.

:scust:
Why would we want Grossman? Wait another week or two when the Eagles cut Mark Sanchez. Our season would be a disaster if Rex Grossman was our backup. Cut Yates, sign anybody but Grossman, and keep grooming Renfree for the future

Mainly because Rex Groosman worked in Kyle's system in Washington.

But I agree, Renfree needs to be groomed for second string.

Kelvin Benjamin went down today. The CaroLOLina Panthers are done without him. He's Cam's only help.

The Saints?

Well
For the sake of this post, let’s assume that Junior Galette is NOT a crazy person and possible pathological liar. I know this is heavy lifting, but it’s worth it. According to Galette, the Saints are currently run by a drug addict coach and teapot-dictator QB, the No. 1 wideout is on his last legs, the team encourages infighting, the head coach moved the team’s training camp to West Virginia just to be closer to his girlfriend (can he not afford plane tickets?), and one of the o-linemen has the yips now because he caught his wife getting “raw-dogged” by another guy.

In a vacuum, I believe ALL of those things. Not only do I believe it, but I believe that the culture of New Orleans encourages such colorful dysfunction. Why, they wouldn’t be New Orleans without it! The tire fire is where they get all that lovable personality! HOO BOY NOW THASSA GUMBO! I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE A MESS BUT WHEN WE THROW IT ALL IN THE POT YOU GET THE REAL NAWLINS FLAVOR THAT WAY GUMBO GUMBO GUMBO!

I haven’t even gotten to the real issue facing this team, which is that the Saints have become a bargaining chip in the burgeoning Benson family feud. It’s not totally clear if owner Tom Benson is mentally competent at the present moment (his daughter, suing for control of the franchise, told a court that Benson was not, and that he was manipulated by his current wife into giving her control of the team). And even if Benson IS senile, he’s somehow still the best candidate amonghis warring clan to maintain control of the team. That’s how bad it’s gotten in New Orleans. Success is beside the point now. The team won a Super Bowl, and now it can go ahead and be torn to shreds in a bitter family struggle that has no sympathetic participants. Did I mention that New Orleans built a statue for Benson even though he tried his damndest to move the team after Katrina?

Brehs, we winning this division :russ:

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Dan Quinn, a native of Morristown, N.J., is ready for his second exhibition game and a mini-homecoming.

Here are five takeaways on the eve of facing the New York Jets at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

1. Red zone: The Falcons spent a major portion of practice working in the red-zone.

“That’s what we were trying to feature today,” Quinn said. “More situation work. There is always a time for that.”

2. Starters: The starters will play longer in the second game. Most of the starters just played 10 snaps in the 31-24 victory over the Titans.

“Everyone will play a little bit longer, especially members who are competing to be on the first unit,” Quinn said. “We’ll extend their playing time. Whether if it’s longer or shorter will be based on the position really.”

3. Rushing attack: Quinn doesn’t care who starts, he wants to see some improvement. The Falcons running backs rushed 30 times for 69 yards against the Titans.

Top backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman aren’t expected to play.

“Whoever is in, the No. 1 thing is coming off the ball, how good could our combination blocks get from the tight end and tackle, the guard and center and the man blocks,” Quinn said. “For the running backs, can they hit it one gap at a time and make their cuts. That’s really the thing we’ve been preaching.

“Whether if you’ve been in here for a day or if you’ve been in here the whole offseason, execute the system.”

4. Offensive line: The offensive line will get heavily scrutinized.

“Offensively at the line of scrimmage and how quickly we can come off the ball and continue to attack,” Quinn said. “That’s really the mindset that we want to have.”

5. Tackling a priority: Quinn will have an eye on the defensive units.

“Defensively, I want to keep emphasizing our tackling,” Quinn said. “Keep emphasizing our mindfulness to go after the football. Those are probably the two things that stand out most for me defensively.”

Mercedes-Benz will acquire naming rights to the new Falcons stadium, according to sources familiar with the negotiations, Atlanta Business Chronicle sister publication SportsBusiness Journal reported Friday.

The German automaker is expected to sign the contract Aug. 21 and the Falcons will officially announce the agreement Aug. 24, sources said. Falcons officials did not respond to an e-mail requesting confirmation and the deal’s terms. Premier Partnerships brokered the agreement for the team and has been pursuing a 30-year deal averaging in the high teens annually. Premier Partnerships also did not respond to a request for comment.

The $1.5 billion stadium, designed by HOK, opens in 2017. It will also serve as the home of Atlanta United FC, a new MLS club owned by Falcons Owner Arthur Blank. The 2020 men’s Final Four is to be played in the new stadium, and the city is competing for future Super Bowls and College Football Playoffs.

Mercedes-Benz moved its U.S. headquarters to Atlanta earlier this year and is building a new facility to open by ‘17.

This marks Mercedes’ second NFL stadium – and second in the NFC South – for which it holds naming rights. The New Orleans Saints in 2011 announced a 10-year deal to put Mercedes’ name on the Superdome. That means the old archrivals could play in stadiums with the same name.

In China, the company has held naming rights for Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai since ‘09, one year before the building opened.

Report: Mercedes-Benz will get Falcons stadium name

The Falcons declined to comment this morning on a report that Mercedes-Benz will acquire the naming rights to the team’s new stadium in downtown Atlanta.

According to Sports Business Journal, the German automaker is expected to sign the contract today.

“We have no comment on the report,” Falcons spokeswoman Kim Shreckengost said.

An announcement is expected Monday at the stadium construction site next to the Georgia Dome.

The Falcons have been marketing naming rights to the $1.4 billion retractable-roof stadium since last year. Team officials have said they expected the name to fetch in the upper range of such deals in the NFL.

The largest NFL naming rights deals are the New York Giants’ and Jets’ deal with MetLife for a reported $17 million to $20 million per year on their shared stadium and the Dallas Cowboys’ deal with AT&T for a reported $17 million to $19 million per year.

Under terms of the Falcons’ stadium deal with the city of Atlanta and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, the team controls the sale of naming rights and retains the revenue received. Neither government entity has approval rights over the naming-rights deal.

Mercedes-Benz announced plans in January to move its U.S. headquarters from New Jersey to metro Atlanta. The company is temporarily housed in an office park in Dunwoody. It plans to build a new headquarters campus in Sandy Springs at Georgia 400 and Abernathy Road.

Having the Mercedes-Benz name on the Falcons stadium could create an odd situation within the NFC South, because the New Orleans Saints, the Falcons’ division rival, already have the automaker’s name on their stadium: the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Mercedes-Benz has a 10-year contract, which began in 2011, for the naming rights to the New Orleans stadium.

Please check back for updates.
