Age 28. Jordan stans don't want to see this. Jordan stans might want to keep scrolling past this to the next news feed item because I have been waiting all day, collecting enough ammo to give you the TRUTH about the best all around basketball talent I have ever seen play the game.
Let me start by pointing out that most of you Jordan stans DON'T EVEN WATCH THE NBA anymore. You sure do have a lot to say about Lebron considering you haven't seen him play. Oh, you watched a couple of playoff series in the last few years? Lebron has been in the league for 10 years and has played over 900 games. Unless you have made an effort to watch lots of televised regular season games and the majority of his playoff games, you have not seen Lebron play you are merely a cliff notes reading, stolen opinion having, highlight reel debating, clueless Jordan stan.
I grew up in the Michael Jordan era when Bulls games were required viewing. I saw Michael Jordan play with my own eyes, probably more times than I have seen Lebron play even. I acknowledge that Jordan is #1 on the list of greatest basketball players of all time. But what I also know, what I have SEEN (on the court, not on a stat sheet or a post-career trophy list), is that Lebron James has more control over the game than Jordan. More all around talent than Jordan. The only things lacking are the mental game and the accomplishments.
Speaking of accomplishments, please get off that "6 RINGS" garbage. That is a post-career total. Jordan did not have 6 RINGS at age 28. Oh, by the way, Bill Russel has 11 rings. please spare me that garbage about ring totals defining greatness, it is only a part of the equation. Otherwise we can go ahead and crown Bill Russel as the GOAT when he is not.
Speaking of the mental game, can we please get over the notion that Jordans "clutch gene" is also such a large part of defining greatness? Once again, it is only part of the equation. There is no doubt in my mind that I would want Jordan taking the final shot over Lebron. Can we please open the transmitters in our brains and say "SO?" Ray Allen, Robert Horry, and Derek Fisher are just as good as Jordan in the clutch shot category. Those guys aren't even top 100 players of all time.
Why is Jordan's way of playing the game considered by people to be the "blueprint" of greatness? Why is Jordan hitting a 15 footer considered to be superior to Lebron making a brillaint off balance pass into a tight passing lane to a wide open Shane Battier for a higher percentage corner 3 not considered to be equal to that?
As Charles Barkley said "We've never asked more of ANY player than we ask of Lebron." During his last 6 years in the league, Lebron has been asked to be Jordan on the offensive end and Pippen on the defensive end. And he has done a GREAT job of living up to both of those expectations. Yet he is constantly ripped in todays social media age for every single mistake he makes...mistakes that Jordan made, mistakes that Magic made, mistakes that Bird made, mistakes that everyone makes. Explain to me how we can expect a 6'8" 260 pound man to guard one of the best and fastest POINT GUARDS in the league in the 4th quarter, play 50 minutes, outscore an entire team by himself in the the 4th quarter, and lead both teams in rebounds and assists in that quarter. Oh wait.....that is exactly what Lebron did in Game 6 and all people could do was trash him for making 2 turnovers at the end (which, oh by the way, happened after Wade came back in the game and destroyed the teams entire rhythm).
This type of performance is not uncommon for Lebron. From shutting down Derrick Rose to Kevin Durant, to guarding positions 1-4 and even sometimes 5 in rare occasions, Lebron has proven himself to be arguably the best defender in the league. He is also the best offensive player in the league when his mind is right. But people don't see that because they don't WATCH basketball. They digest stories and commentary and scream 6 RINGS 6 RINGS and spew regurgitated jokes about 4th quarter failures or televised free agency decisions or teammates screwing his mom or his hairline. Get off it.
DID YOU KNOW, that on his way to his 4th MVP in the last 5 years, Lebron led the "all star" (HAHA) Miami Heat in points, rebounds, and assists and finished 2nd in defensive player of the year voting? Think about that for a second. Jordan has had statistical years superior to Lebrons, but all things are relative. Jordan played in a different era with a different tempo of play, different rules, no zone defense, and many other differences. Stat comparisons are fun, but they don't tell the whole story. Lebron's year this year was on par with the best of any Jordan year. My eyes tell me that, I don't need a box score.
Lebron James is easily the most over scrutinized, over analyzed, over criticized athlete of all time. I'm not even going to limit it to basketball, I can't think of anyone in any sport who even comes close. Perhaps Tiger Woods post-cheating scandal is in the same discussion, but he still isn't close to Lebron's level of scrutiny. Can you imagine what the Twitter era would have been like when Jordan was in one of his famous 7 for 25 shooting performances? Oh, you don't remember those? Thats because time, marketing, and lack of true reflection have clouded your mind. Michael Jordan was not an untouchable god.
You people are being controlled by the media. Control yourself. Watch the NBA, it is a great game. The best athletes in the world play in the NBA. Lebron James is arguably the greatest pure athlete of all time, you don't even understand the privilege you have to witness him.
In summary: Jordan is the greatest, Lebron has potential to surpass him. He does need more championships, more MVPs, and more dependability night in and night out before he can be put in the discussion. But he is not even 30 years old yet. Its too early to end the discussion.
