Miami Heat guard Garrett Temple making push for a roster spot
With Chalmers sidelined with a sore quadriceps, Temple has possibly played his way into a roster spot. He's caught the eye of the coaching staff, averaging 4.5 points and 3.3 assists.
Temple is in competition with Terrel Harris for the third point guard spot. The Heat have been grooming Harris as a combo guard, but Temple has averaged five more minutes during the preseason.
"He's got a savviness about him," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I feel very comfortable when he's running our offense … He's a highly intelligent player. He understands how we want to play for only being here for three weeks."
Temple has already bought into what it takes for any Heat point guard to succeed. With LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the roster, the team needs the position to facilitate while scoring occasionally.
"It's not tough, everybody is real competitive," Temple said. "We all want the best for the team. You just have to play your role, and LeBron, Dwyane and Chris and Ray Allen are the scorers. Get the ball to those guys and get in the right spot."
Temple said this is the most focused he's ever been for a training camp. He decided against bringing a car to South Florida to help avoid the tempting nightlife scene.
"I'm here on business," Temple said. "Until that gets accomplished, I'm staying away from South Beach. I've spent more time in the gym than South Beach."
