He actually yo-yoed. He bulked up in 2002, dropped the weight around the Colorado saga, and bulked up again his first post-Shaq season. Then he lost it and never got that heavy again.

I remember this. Did help him be stronger throughout the season, but I think Kobe went too hard with the gym + basketball workouts, which is why his knees were mincemeat at age 29. After that and all the compensatory moves eventually the achillies went and that was a wrap.

Kobe with modern recovery methods + modern NBA rules + no rape charge = 16 time MVP, 16 rings.

If Kobe had LeBron's bish ass mentality to create superteams + having no rape charge as you said = 7 rings + 4 MVPs

In 2004 after Shaq left, he should've signed 1 yr deals like that nikka and by 2005 he should've been teaming up with Dirk and T-Mac

Yeah Kobe bulked up, then decided to lose more of the weight to stay a little quicker.

Pretty sure 2005-2006 that year he put up 81 he was still 225.

It was afterwards when he was KB24 that he chose to drop weight. I'm pretty sure that was for the 2006-2007 season.

You can tell he actually lost some explosion at that point. Yes, losing weight means you can actually lose straight line speed and vertical jump considering how much muscle you lost.

He played in one of the biggest, slowest eras of all-time in his prime, where you had 7’ oafs camping in the paint just to take fouls on Shaq (as a league), on top of no shooting, so the whole team had a foot damn near in the paint. So that mass was generally needed just to survive all that contact. The trade-off is explosion and more wear and tear on the joints.

I think there was thought involved, there just wasn’t enough history to study yet on the wear and tear.

Good riddance tho, I hated that era of overall basketball tbh. Great individuals at the top, decent specialists, shytty boring team ball due to lower skilled role players

I don't think they thought this part out as much, which is why he immediately slimmed down after yokin up again in 06.

Different sport and intentions but reminds me of when boxers try to climb weight classes too fast or someone like Roy Jones trying to yo-yo back and forth.
