Deadpool is putting together a team to defend Staten Island during Marvel's King in Black event. His first pick to join: the Wu-Tang Clan.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Deadpool #10

During the King in Black’s conquest to take over the world with his horde of symbiote dragons, he has faced some of the strongest heroes on Earth, including Captain America, Thor, Wolverine and Captain Marvel. But there’s one group even tougher than all those heroes combined that Knull may have to face: the Wu-Tang Clan. The legendary hip hop group lent a hand against the King in Black during the latest issue of Deadpool.

The Wu-Tang Clan is a collective of lyrical masters as formidable as the Avengers themselves: RZA, GZA, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Cappadonn and Ol’ Dirty b*stard. Since forming on Staten Island in 1992, they’ve produced multiple platinum-selling albums including their debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), considered one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. They’ve also branched out and produced a fashion line, video games and a Hulu original series about their founding. Heavily influenced by kung fu movies and comic books, they’ve referenced Marvel comics and heroes multiple times through the year. Marvel returned the favor in the most recent King in Black tie-in, where Deadpool has established his own kingdom on the Island Formerly Known As Staten.

In Deadpool #10 written by Kelly Thompson with art by Gerardo Sandoval, Deadpool and his team of monsters are reckoning with the invasion of Earth by Knull, the King in Black. Deadpool’s solution to the problem is to put together a team of monsters to fight for the Earth. When reminded that he already has a team of monsters at his disposal, Deadpool says, “We can do better. This is a tie-in event, man. It’s go big or go home time!” He clearly aims to go big, as his picks for potential new members of the team includes the entire Wu-Tang Clan. Elsa Bloodstone asks Deadpool if they even still live on Staten Island, to which he replies, “If yes, then recruiting them to the team or protecting them with our lives is obviously our number one priority.

The team that Deadpool puts together ultimately doesn’t include any members of the Wu-Tang Clan. It doesn’t even have any of the Wu-Tang’s affiliates, the Killa Beez. But they still help out when Jeff the Land Shark is infected by the symbiote and turns into a bloodthirsty monster. Deadpool is able to get the symbiote off of Jeff by blasting him with music from a ridiculously large speaker. He tells Elsa that the speaker is a loaner, implying that get got it from the Wu-Tang Clan. “I told you some musicians who think fondly of the Island Formerly Known as Staten would appreciate my saving their beloved stomping grounds.” The song he plays to get the symbiote off Jeff is “Tearz” by, of course, the Wu-Tang Clan.

The Wu-Tang Clan have not made any official appearances in Marvel Comics, but they have referenced the Marvel Universe characters in their lyrics several times. Ghostface Killah has used the moniker Ironman and Tony Starks at various times, in addition to naming his first album Ironman and calling his record label Starks Enterprises. He also appeared in a deleted scene in the first Iron Man movie. Similarly, Method Man has been known to use the name Johnny Blaze, which is the real name of Ghost Rider. Ghostface and Method Man both played themselves in the Luke Cage television series. Method Man also played Ben Urich in the podcast adaptation of the Marvels limited series, and took part in the Marvel's Voices anthology one-shot commemorating Black History Month.

It remains to be seen whether any members of the Wu-Tang Clan will make further appearances in the King in Black event. If they do, though, then Knull had better watch out. Because even though he has a seemingly unstoppable army and has been around for millennia, Wu-Tang is here forever.
