Wouldn't say they breezed, as they struggled in the games against Australia, Denmark, Argentina and Belgium, but they were impressive defensively.

Congrats to them. :ehh:
They had already qualified form the group so they didn't even try to win vs Denmark. All of the rest of the games were won within 90 minutes and they were never close to being in trouble vs any team. They breezed.

He’s right and nothing wrong with the tweet. At the end of the day that type of rhetoric, while well-intended, is most likely to be pushed by the extreme right in France. It goes without saying France, and it’s football team in particular are diverse, but these dudes are 100 percent byproducts of the country they were born and raised in.
Would also be completely disingenuous to deny their African heritage.

In a vaccum yes but that isnt what some segments of fremch society think. Mass immigration to Europe has created a dilema that is different to America for example. There is no such thing as an American, its an artificial creation but there is an Englishman or a German and these new immigrants will never be accepted as such. This however is dangerous as you have 3rd generation Turks and Pakistanjs who dont call themselves german ir english, creating a divided society that could explode any minute.

But the thing is that no player deny their heritage. You saw all the Pogba or Kimpembe's videos dancing/singing to Carribean and African tunes. They are perfectly in line and proud of their African heritage. But it seems like people not French just don't understand that many Frenchies have a dual heritage (parents' countries and French culture/upbringing). And they are both taking from it.

The current debate around the team is dumb because for some reason, people are trying to strip them off their Frenchness (like 50% of their identity) just because they are black. Nobody say shyt about Hernandez or Lloris who are of Spanish descent but when it comes to Black players, they are suddenly African. Mendy's response makes perfect sense.

They were underwhelming against Australia and needed VAR to overcome them
They were 2-1 down at by the hour mark against Argentina
And against Belgium, like Courtois said, once they scored from a set piece, they sat back and invited Belgian pressure

People have said throughout this thread that France never really performed at the level most people had presumed they would during this World Cup.

But they won it, so that's all that matters.

That's a reach. Absolutely no one is trying to strip them of being french. They obviously french. All born and raised. Its not even a debate its an observation that they are mostly of african decent. One of the most maligned groups in france which I'm sure you're aware. Pointing that out isnt taking aware anything about it being France who won the world cup. I'm sure I don't need to address your point about Hernandez or Lloris in this context.

You know it's the talk that is being told around. The "African won the WC" can be used as a joke (obviously) but is mostly dog whistle, that's how the far right talk when they want to shyt on countries with visible minorities.

You really had a problem with this below?

His second take was a lot more thoughtful, his first take wasnt.

Its not as simple as French people wanting to claim Africans when they do things great - as I said in the other thread, the Jean Marie Le Pen comment thats often cited in 1998 was referencing a succesful team. You could find French racists/far right on social media before the final who were saying they were rooting for Croatia for similar reasons. For some on the far-right, successful or not, people with the roots the French team have are not French. So when he jokes about their tan not being native to the South of France, it sounds similar to that rhetoric. Good satire should be well-informed, and I thought Noah's first thing was extremely lazy.

Noah lacks talent and is barely subversive. This time he did a bad joke about a country and a context he doesn’t understand. He should’ve had the humility to apologize and recognize why his message can hurt minorities in France. Instead he decided to play the smart ass in his reply, playing the diversity card, criticizing France for being too colorblind etc. Nothing new here, typical French bashing.

The reality is that he lacks cultural sensitivity. He’s imposing his Anglo American racial views on a different country, disrespecting someone else traditions and someone else vision of citizenship. Being an educated African he should know better about the core identity differences between France and English speaking countries.

The French ambassador did a mistake tho. He should never have answered to him. He gave him undeserved attention. This was a naive reaction. That being said, we are used to insults. It saddens me but every time France succeeds on the international stage, the foreign press starts this type of ugly debates (1998, 2006). Surprisingly this time, criticism is not just coming from right ring groups from Italy or Poland but also from the American liberal/left. May be it highlights how divided and bad the left has became over there and why you have this president.

Anyway, this geek puppet won’t take anything away from this amazing French squad and the top notch football academies in France. I’m glad Pogba and Mendy answered the critics immediately, instead of some politicians.

Exactly. He first joke was just playing to social media sentiments in the anglo world and was not even slightly informed. Saying we know this team isnt *really* French is simply bad satire.

When you still have people on the extreme-right saying stuff like the below, what exactly is Noah's lazy take speaking to? His response was simply flipping the script and playing to the masses:
Amid Monday’s euphoria were reminders that her continual warnings about “migratory submersion” have not been forgotten.

“It seems that France has won the World Cup. Maybe. No doubt. But which France?” the far-right writer Renaud Camus, a prominent supporter of Ms. Le Pen, wrote in a news release.

Was it “the New France, multicultural and multiethnic, the France of the ‘Great Replacement,’ France replaced, colonized, conquered, invaded?” Mr. Camus asked. “The team’s composition reflects only one thing,” he wrote. “Ethnic substitut
ion.”
