The academy is a bunch of pompous idiots who love thinking they’re in power. Will just took one of the few power moves away from them. Only thing left is to take the trophy away which they know he covets the most which is why he’s acting like this

Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after sparking controversy for slapping Chris Rock onstage at Sunday's Oscars ceremony.

The actor, 53, who later that night went on to accept the best actor Oscar for his work in "King Richard," announced in a statement sent by his reps to USA TODAY Friday that he will be withdrawing from the Academy due to his “shocking, painful and inexcusable" actions

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith continued. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

you don't even have to be a part of the Academy to get nominated or win an award
Academy will make him ineligible for future awards for a period of time
I think Whoopi and members of the board like Ava Devernay are going to make sure he doesn't lose his Oscar
I think Hollywood still wants Will Smith around especially now

This is what you call bowing out. An example of this is applying to a job and lying how much you make. You go through the interview get the offer, but when they run the background check they find out you make 40K less than what you put down as you making at your current gig.

So now you decide to bow out and decline the job because you caught red handed and have no position to negotiate.
