Will has been a mainstream staple. As a black man, he's always been respected for doing things his way. Even tho he was called corny at times, he ALWAYS overcame that somehow and got ppls respect.
After a series of disappointing films for really the last 12-15 yrs, and his career seeming somewhat over in terms of anything Oscar related, breh resurges with a role that finally got him an Oscar after 32 yrs of acting. We were far from the Big Willie Style, Willenium, summer blockbuster Will Smith that was once known.....but he finally climbed that Oscar mountain that he'd never achieved in his prime.
Aside from that, dude has fans who are still Fresh Prince fans as in the music, as well as the insanely popular TV show. I know he's only a human, but he let ALOT of ppl down last night.
In having bought his book, he repeatedly talks about feeling like a coward as a child for not doing anything when his father would physically assault his mother. Him feeling like a coward was a running theme in the book. I guess slapping Chris Rock and screaming was his way of not feeling cowardly?
To many ppl what happened last night was funny or entertaining. But to me it's sad, that a 50+ yr old Black man did that on world-wide television.
We saw everyone else's reaction on camera but never saw Jada. I want to see her face when Will was yelling at Chris Rock after the slap. I know that's his wife, but breh you gotta handle that backstage during the commercial. At worst, walk on stage, and quietly tell Chris to chill bc your wife is going thru something.
And Chris Rock is a whole other topic. Feel terrible for him. I feel terrible for them both, but in separate ways. Two big black icons of entertainment in an embarassing moment that white ppl and unwoke black folks will joke about for a long time.

I mean his wife was joked on about a medical condition she has of course he’s gonna get angry and defend her. Even if you don’t like Jada how is what he did “weird” how does it not make sense? For context, the Smiths did boycott the Oscars the year that Chris Rock happened to host it. He mocked them that year to a point where Jada try to have him banned from hosting again. I hope that provides context to the hate that they have for him but that doesn't excuse that act on Will's part. This could've been handled at one the many after parties where folks normally lose their composure and go full on 4th wall. Nobody wins here.
