I think this is in jest to engage with fans and promote the show. I doubt he's having a breakdown over this shyt, even though I'd imagine he's disappointed with the reception.
The ugly thing in my mind is it's another example of how stupid a lot of people are today. An actor playing a bad guy, antagonist, disturbed character etc does not mean the actor is also bad/disturbed/etc. He's playing a role. It's been really odd watching young Weeknd fans have a mental breakdown on twitter because Abel is playing a bad guy and they don't know how to...deal with it. Jesus christ what's wrong with these kids. It's like this is the culmination of decades of downplaying art in order to pump mindless #content to people. Why think critically about anything, it's either "content good" or "content bad" depending on the identity or moralist views you subscribe to. Yikes.
