I also thought it was meh. Starts off very interesting despite some clunky exposition, has some nice scares and really gets you invested, wondering what "it' is. But it's basically ruined by the third act, which drags on and feels like a train wreck. I didn't know it was based on a novel, and afterwards I def go the sense that this just leads into whatever the next book in the series is instead of nailing a real ending.
Direction wise I didn't get a real sense of her style. Can't really say it's M Night-esque beyond the subject matter. Visually it almost felt like a television show, compared to M Night's flare for style.
