In the comic book Rick doesn't kill Negan; he defeats Negan's group and locks Negan up for a while but then Negan ends up joining Rick's team.
He stayed at the hilltop in the season finale so he wouldnt blow his cover about giving up valuable info on Negan
They have a lot of time, the next enemy is The Whisperers but they are 59 issues behind the comics. We are just now getting to issue 100 with 6 completed seasons. It would take 3.5 seasons of 16 episodes each to catch up to the comics and thats if no other comic came out starting now.
