The very laws of physics imply that artificial intelligence must be possible. What’s holding us up?

We already have AI. When a computer can visually spot or sense overall changes in the natural environment it is commanded to interpret into numbers and commands and data and deliverance of electricity it is already AI ie: Security cameras
Alarms
Meteorological Technology
Etc.

Control over deliverance of electrical signals is raw intelligence and life, basically. It is judgment and self awareness.

Eh, those are just highly-specific expert systems (which, to your point, are usually associated with AI).

True AI requires consciousness and a sense of self-awareness and the ability to learn as well as an innate desire for something other than programmed behaviors.

I think when (if) we figure out where consciousness comes from, we'll be much closer to AI.

Self Awareness or consciousness is just an awareness of one's environment in relation to one's survival. A car is low on gas so a light comes on and a sound is emitted to warn the driver of its need for gas. Once the gas is all gone it shuts down.

You hold a man's head underwater and he begins flailing his arms and clutching at you to let you know he's low on air until his air is gone and he shuts down.

In both cases it all boils down to electrical signals being sent to a central processing unit to be interpreted a certain way before being emitted again in response. You go outside and it's hot so your brain interprets this and begins sending out commands to your body to remedy the situation for continued survival ie sweating. Everything after "It's hot" is a command from the CPU, even requests.

AI evolves aka upgrades exactly how "living" organisms evolve. It constantly reinterprets data in its environment to "survive" more efficiently. AI on our lvl is already here, the question is will quantum computing be fast enough to manipulate predetermination of paths of light, bending the time-space continuum.
