they're too cheesy to ever be taken seriously by non gamers.. voice acting is almost always AWFUL.
A lot of art is considered cheesy outside of its respective community. Art in general is kind of written off by American culture so I wouldn't use that as a barometer.

I think looking at art through the lens of it being a vehicle of expression, yes, playing a game can be art. The most obvious example to me is "drifting" in racing sims. You could look at this shyt like ballet, breakdancing, synchronized swimming, whatever. But its expressive, it requires mastery of techniques, and it has a corresponding subculture... to me all requirements for something to be "art".

Is art = skill though? Not arguing either way jsut asking.

When i play FPS there are some dudes who are just OMFG stop shooting me in the face skillful, is that art? Skill yes but art?

In world of warcraft hunters yoused to have to run turn in the air, fire a shot, and turn back in the air all before landing, it required a lot of skill, when done with any degree of skill it was almost artful watching.

I've been playing Crysis 3 demo on xbox lately. The other day some dude jumped off a 2nd story and before he landed 2 people were dead, he slid killed 1 more guy then got up like nothing. The shyt was a sight to behold, skillful yes, artful though? Yes? I don't know.

If skill = art then fuk yes gaming is art.

well there's "reaction time" and such, but some of that stuff you're talking about takes some (quick) creative thinking

Skill in and of itself isn't art, but skills used to express one's self is art, IMO

Like you can have two ball players, both good and putting up good stats, but one might be all rigid and by the book like Tim Duncan while the other is flamboyant (no homo) like a street ball dude. I would call the second one an artist... he might do a lot of shyt that's completely unnecessary but is doing it to express himself and his individuality. Same shyt can apply to games.

as a whole games like literature and film are made for entertainment. i think you could make a case that some individual games are artistic....:manny:

so again, dude who shot me in the face, what was he expressing exactly?

I get what you're saying but how does one express themselves in a game?

@daze23 yeah i agree, there's a lot of creative thinking and quick reflexes in some game, that i'd call art...

I believe games like Heavy Rain & the upcoming The Last of Us are really trying to take gaming to that area of pure 'art'.

I can't wait to see what they have in store

Shadow of the Colossus

that game was art, I don't care what anyone says
