Olympic B-Girl Raygun Apologizes To Breakdancing Community For Controversial Performance
Breakdancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn has apologized for the backlash caused by her controversial performance at the 2024 Olympics.
The Australian athlete failed to score a single point during the competition and quickly became the subject of online mockery for her moves – which included a kangaroo hop of sorts at one point
Talking to Australia’s Channel 10 TV this week, she said: “I am very sorry for the backlash that the community has experienced, but I can’t control how people react. Unfortunately, we just need some more resources in Australia for us to have a chance to be world champions.
“In the last year, I have trained my hardest … I have really put my body through it, put my mind through it. But if that’s not good enough for someone, what can I say? It was really sad how much hate that it did evoke. And a lot of the responses is also just due to people not being very familiar with breaking and the diversity of approaches in breaking.”
She also noted she is the best b-girl in her country, adding, “I think my record speaks to that,” she said. “I was the top ranked Australian B girl in 2020 and 2022, and 2023… so the record is there. But anything can happen in a battle.”
It was the first time breakdancing had been included in the Olympics and Snoop Dogg was seen watching the event from the stands.
Raygun’s performance was widely mocked as she failed to perform any traditional breakdancing moves and instead was seen flopping and rolling around the floor.
There were plenty of viral videos made of her performance, with one dubbing commentary from Peter Griffin in Family Guy over the footage
Another viewer also compared one move she did to the Grinch creeping around.
Even Dr. Dre chimed in on her moves, telling Entertainment Tonight: “I did not like that. It’s so many great breakdancers that I don’t know why they had this particular person doing that"
“It was funny, I got some laughs out of it, but what the fukk? […] There are incredible breakdancers out right now; I don’t know how that happened.”
There's alot of jokes on this but it's not cool.
I don't know if she is the reason breakdancing at the Olympics got cancelled.
But it's an insult to breakers who worked way harder.
The Olympics is a joke.
Actual breakdancing competitions have a much higher standard.
The Olympics' administration is in shambles. They sent athletes to other other far off countries for gender tests that were inconclusive as well this year.
This is why it's great to see other award ceremonies be built up.
I respect her for breakdancing but it comes off as she was there because of nepotism.
It's a trip. And for the Olympics to cancel it so fast is horrible.
They need to bring it back.
The host city did, however, choose flag football and squash to make their Olympic debuts four years from now. And lacrosse, cricket, baseball and softball will make a return.
Host cities collaborate with the International Olympic Committee years in advance to determine which sports to include in their program in addition to the core 28.
Olympics didnt cancel it. Its up to the hosting city which events to include and LA passed on Breakdancing before this Raygun drama.
Edit: she was only there from nepotism as AUS had no governing breaking body and her & husband were given the keys as they connected.
Okay I understand. Who was her husband? Someone in power?
Ya man, fukk nepotism. It's about performance.
I admire she tried, but honestly for what reason? Fame?
From what I know she moved hella foul. It's akin to someone who dabbles in rap, abuses power and complains.
She's so, so far off from street breakers.
Thanks for the new information, I appreciate it alot. I didn't get what was happening.
Yeah the fix was in her and her husband rigged it so that only she would represent Australia chick KNEW she was trash and still decided to rig the game so only she would be qualified there wasnt no damn tryouts
definitely mockery, outright
