The public schools are meant to teach people how to be good citizens, not to teach academic excellence so of course other countries with different missions and goals for the education of its peoples will be a better system

Intelligence is always kept at a premium, to paraphrase Gramsci and Freire, because knowledge is a necessity for change and revolution. America is not going to give the proper tools for liberation to the masses, it would upset the system of capitalism.

I still think our higher ed system is top 5 at least and one of the most developed of anywhere

Is anyone surprised? An intelligent, educated group does not vote this clown into office:

America doesn't really need to be the best in education. Or to necessarily keep its workforce highly educated.

Want to know why?

It's simple: immigrants.

America can simply import and take other people's talent and investment without having to lift a finger. It has done this for quite some time.

Education was really initially developed for the upper class. Not the masses.

I'm not saying we can't use improvement, only that because of America's high immigration rate, there's no incentive to improve.

:dwillhuh: I think you missed this part.

Why the results matter
According to the institute, "human capital" is an indicator of economic growth or decline.

Americas grows at a decent rate per year. It's around 3℅ which is better than almost every other western country. Mainly because of immigrants and the skills they bring and the companies they start. A large percentage of the biggest companies in silicon valley are started by immigrants.

:dwillhuh: This is bad though. It's the equivalent of having the smart kid help you study, but still getting a C on the test.

Just because you said it nicely, doesn't make it good.

The Comfort Zone
This is largely because of our system. It sucks. The top ten countries have a few things in common.

1. They value vocational education. After a certain age, students follow either academia or a trade/skill. Meanwhile, we're obsessed with everyone being "college ready." In NYC alone, the vocational schools were decimated :francis:
2. No time for "wayward" students. Here it is almost impossible to expel or transfer a student with SEVERE behavior issues. I'm talking students who regularly fight, curse out teachers, and are generally disruptive. One jackass kid can ruin the entire atmosphere. Violent incidents are actually not reported like that because schools take a hit when there are "too many."
3. Teachers are highly educated with multiple degrees, and held to a high standard. shytty ass teachers cannot hack it in certain countries. I've said many times on here that tenure does NOT mean a "job for life" but in my school alone there are some horrible teachers who are still there (and shouldn't be :snoop:)
4. Lack of a "testing" culture. Students are taking multiple standardized tests every single year. For what?
5. Leaders are held to a high standard. Too many vindictive and garbage principals in the American system. Some principals have fukked staff, snatched licenses, fudged grades, and STILL have their jobs. On top of that, a bunch have never taught a day in their life.

In fairness, many of those "top" countries also have smaller, overall wealthier homogeneous populations.
