Batum, Clippers agree on two-year deal
The Los Angeles Clippers and Nicolas Batum have reportedly agreed on a two-year, $22 million deal
according to Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes. Batum declined his player option in order to become an unrestricted free agent, but the Clippers were always the favorites to retain his services.
Batum opting in order to secure a more lucrative, long-term contract seemed to be the smart play all along. After all, the veteran forward is still set to earn roughly $8.9 million this season from the Charlotte Hornets. In essence, he’ll be double-dipping.
Batum, 33, is coming off a two-year run with the Clippers where he’s averaged 8.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting 46.3% overall and 40.2% on 3s. He’s played in 126 out of a possible 154 regular season games and all 21 of the team’s postseason and play-in contests.
When the Frenchman arrived in Los Angeles, there was some skepticism about how much he had left in the tank. However, all Batum has done is prove those doubters wrong as he’s become a vital cog in Tyronn Lue’s plans.
“It will be fun next year,” Batum said multiple times in his post-game interview after the Clippers had their season end at the hands of the New Orleans Pelicans during the NBA’s play-in tournament.
“I love the team. I’ve been here for almost two years now. I was almost out of this league. It's been two different years. But I loved it, I loved it. I love it here. That coach, those guys. I mean, it's tough today, but it's going to be fun next year.”
We’ll see how much fun it actually will be, as Batum rejoins a roster and team that will be getting Kawhi Leonard and Paul George back healthy for the beginning of next season. Not to mention the
reported arrival of veteran guard John Wall and the
extension of stalwart center Ivica Zubac.
“We know what we’re going to be next year, the goals for next year,” Batum said after the play-in tournament.
Let’s see if both player and team can live up to those lofty goals now that they’re reunited.
LATEST ON HARTENSTEIN
According to
Shams Charania of The Athletic, Isaiah Hartenstein is headed to the New York Knicks on a two-year, $16 million deal that’s fully guaranteed.
Hartenstein, 24, bet on himself last offseason by declining his player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers because of the glut of centers they had on their roster after drafting USC’s Evan Mobley and re-signing Jarrett Allen.
“I talked with Cleveland; they just had a lot of bigs so I wanted to play and that was my biggest thing,” Hartenstein said back in mid-October. “I think I’m a good center in the NBA, and so I didn’t want to be in a situation where I’m on a team that I really had no chance of playing.”
That bet paid off for Hartenstein as he now gets a deal that is commensurate with his talent level.
