The Sopranos was all about how inept and impotent Tony was as a leader and human being

I think Tony was a good mob leader it's just that's how the mob life ends. Violently dead or in jail, you can't escape both forever. The last couple of eps it was revealed Carlo's son got knocked for dealing ecstasy so Carlo flipped. Carlo was a made guy with a lot of responsibility he would have totally done Tony in if he testified.
So even if Tony didn't get wacked at the end even though he probably did he had a RICO trial pending. That's just the life no matter how good a leader you are that's where it's headed.

Everybody is rewatching this on HBO Max?

Tony was a shyt boss as the op said he either procrastinated or let fear or pettiness lead to him making a ton of bad decisions. He let his people die, loss a ton of money, and slow walked his way into a war that got most his people killed.

Honestly the only legit good decision he ever made was to not kill Paulie on that boat, the fact he was seriously considering it tells you what a shyt boss he was.

No, he should have killed Paulie. That's who was keeping the war with NY going. Trust he told Phil Vito was back in the Jersey area and that Tony was trying to kill Phil before Phil went into hiding.
Yeah, I just finished a rewatch on like Monday. Really, it's just a morbid show about a culture who's inhabitants are trapped in a short cycle of death who can't adapt to the world changing around them. It's really kinda weird it was a cultural phenomenon. Nothing good really happens to anyone on the show, it's just a slow spiral downward for the DiMeo crew out of New Jersey.

Im still early season 2 on my rewatch so this might be off, but Tony killing Ralphie and not giving Tony B up pretty much destroyed the crew

Ralph not really. But yeah Tony B killing Phil's brother Billy was the beginning of the end. Even if he gave up Tony B., Phil would eventually get around to hating Tony/NJ for it again and the same problems would have occurred. It was more Vito situation making NY/NJ relations really bad, Ralph maybe weakened the loyalty in the NJ crew to Tony but nothing significant.
