We're on the blood path now
If you think about it, the entire show shows you just how bad things can get when there's a inept leader in charge. As Tony said to Melfi, everything Tony touched "turned to shyt." And anything negative that happens always happened because he either failed to act or he overreacted. Think about all the people that were either killed or died that he could have saved had he got involved or not got involved
Gigi: He decided to give Gigi the captain spot instead of Ralph, even though Ralph was well liked and made more money for the family. Everybody, including Uncle Junior, tried to tell Tony that the right thing to do was to make Ralphie captain. Instead he sticks with Gigi, and what happens? The stress gets to Gigi, and he ends up having a heart attack while taking a shyt.
Vito: Dude was Tony's highest earner, looked out for Tony's wife when he was in a coma, and was pretty loyal throughout the show. Tony was ambivalent about Vito being gay, and in the end, was willing to overlook it because of the money Vito brought in. Instead of listening to Vito's idea of getting involved at strip clubs and kicking up to him without anyone knowing it, he lets the situation get out of control and Phil ends on whacking him. What happens? Tony loses a shyt ton of money and goes into debt with Hesh, and lets Phil put the squeeze on him and his crew.
Jackie Jr: This one Tony couldn't really control, though he could have spared his life. He tried to intervene in Jackie's life and stop him from doing mob related shyt. However, Tony could have took control and told Ralph not to have Jackie clipped; after all, Tony ultimately told RALPH he could do what he wanted. So what happens? Ralph has Vito kill Jackie, Rosalie Aprile turns into a emotionally crippled human being, and his daughter is traumatized for life.
Tony Blundetto: Tony looked at his cousin as a weirdo when his cousin decided to get into massage therapy. He never really supports him. Tony thought that when Tony B got out of jail it would be like the old days, but when he saw it wouldn't be he frowned upon him. So what happens? Tony B gets too involved and goes overboard and clips Joey Peeps (I think) and Billy Leotardo. Tony puts his cousin in hiding, only to go back and kill his cousin. What's funny is if Tony had just held out a little longer he wouldn't have had to do anything because, remember, Johnny Sac gets arrested by the FBI right when Tony reaches out and basically tells him he clipped his cousin.
The war with NY: Tony bent over backwards so many times to keep Carmine and Johnny, and ultimately Phil, happy. John would have been forever in his debt had he went through with whacking Carmine, but he backed out. What's funny about the war was all of it would have been avoided had he backed Little Carmine (who arguably ends up being the NY boss anyway after Phil is killed). Instead he waits until Phil is about to take charge before he pleads Carmine take the reins, when it's too late and Carmine wants nothing to do with the boss position. Even with all of that, had Tony just made right with Phil about Tony B whacking his brother, then maybe all of the shyt is avoided. The premise of the war with NY is entirely over Phil indirectly retaliating for the death of his brother. Had he let Phil kill Tony B instead, Phil would have probably let all of the shyt go.
I could go on and on with this shyt: Gloria Trillo, Ralphie, etc.
The whole irony of the show is in the end his family doesn't care about all the sacrifices he made for them (much like Walter White in Breaking Bad). AJ goes through the same depression and despair Tony himself goes through as an adult, and sees his life is meaningless, and Meadow ends up being a lawyer so that she can represent the unprivileged (indirectly getting back at her dad for all the things she sees wrong with his and her families lifestyle).
