Sources told ESPN.com that the Nets are now trying to complete a proposed trade with the Los Angeles Lakers in which they would take Jordan Hill into their $5.25 million disable player exception for Brook Lopez.

The Nets, sources said, are prepared to complete the deal, despite the fact that adding Hill in this manner will add more than $15 million to this season's payroll and take it beyond the $200 million mark. But sources say the Lakers are talking to other teams about Hill and haven't yet committed to deal him to Brooklyn.

While him being out doesn’t completely kill the chances of Gasol getting traded at the deadline, it’s pretty close.

It was always difficult to find a deal that worked anyway. First, only a few teams could or would add his massive $19.3 million salary to their books for a rental — Gasol can be a free agent this summer. However, there were a few teams open to it, for example the Suns, who want to solidify their playoff standing.

On top of the small market, Los Angeles wanted more than just a straight salary dump for Gasol, they wanted an asset back — and a pretty good one. Remember they were asking for one of the two highest of Phoenix’s potentially four first round picks in this draft, something that pushed the rebuilding Suns away from the bargaining table. The Lakers felt Gasol was worth more than a straight salary dump, other teams did not agree.

It looks like the Lakers will have Gasol through the end of the season. Don’t bet on his return to the team next year, this relationship has run its course.

Knew it.. They gonna trade a top 5 pick to get Love early.. fukk this team

unless its Exum/Wiggins/Embiid, no one else is really that good that we should keep them no matter what

I don't think we should get Love but I would be open to trading the 4th or 5th pick in this draft if the top 3 guys are off the board.

id strongly consider trading the pick. I want(ed) embiid, but if his back and knees an issue, then NO.

i'll take a proven double double machine w/ a few miles.

Another Laker coming to my hometown?

I guess I'ma have to cop me a Waka Flocka Hill Cavs jersey if true:manny:

Anyways, how could they NOT just get rid of Pau and go all the way in on the tank? We dont need him trying to win games and our FO just need to write off this season. Damn they're stupid:snoop:

The LA Lakers are facing decisions about how to proceed in the 20 or so hours remaining before the NBA’s trade deadline, and with that in mind, general manager Mitch Kupchak is meeting with team president Jim Buss on Wednesday night, a source told Sporting News.

It now seems that the team will make a move of some sort before the deadline.

First on the agenda is how to reduce the team’s luxury tax bill, which is slated to run more than $11.5 million. The easiest path would be to trade away big man Pau Gasol, and the team has had discussions with the Phoenix Suns about that. LA would get back the expiring contract of Emeka Okafor. The teams have talked for weeks about Gasol.

But the Lakers are also considering moving forward Jordan Hill and the $3.5 million on his contract. The Nets have discussed taking on the deal and would be able to absorb his salary with the disabled player exception they received when Brook Lopez was injured. That would save the Lakers not only the remainder of Hill’s salary, but also about $6 million in luxury tax payments.

Sporting News earlier reported that Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov had given a green light to such a deal.

Another possibility has the Suns taking on Hill — and possibly giving the Lakers back a draft pick. Phoenix wants to bolster its frontcourt, which is light on heft with Channing Frye, Miles Plumlee, Markieff and Marcus Morris, and rookie Alex Len.

The Lakers also are considering other destinations for guard Steve Blake, who is on the books for $4 million. Ultimately, the Lakers would prefer to jettison enough payroll to move under the tax threshold altogether, which would not only save them money, but would also help them avoid the dreaded “repeater tax” status. Tax rates soar for teams that are over the tax for the three previous seasons.
