What is the strategy behind firing nukes first?

Like how does Putin see that as a win in the long run for Russia?

Russian strategy is that they believe a nuclear strike will deescalate a situation. It’s called the “escalate to deescalate” strategy. Meaning first strike capability will be used to cripple the wills of western powers to retaliate. It’s an old Soviet Union policy that Putin may still adhere to. Crazy.

It’s hard to even imagine someone being crazy enough to use nukes. They haven’t been used on a country since 1945 and the nukes today are even more powerful.

It would kill a few hundred thousand people and possibly 1 million more would die from the radiation.

This is a complete hypothetical and not how I feel about anything. But could the US take over the Ukraine in 72 hours? Again don't look too much into that question, it's just something I've been wondering regarding military strength and all that crap.

It all depends, none of us truly know no matter what we say. Ukraine has gained a lot of experience. Most of the former USSR satellites do but ukraines is more recent and consistent. It’s also a big ass country with a lot of open ground and foliage.

They are also being shored up with lots of AT and AA weapons, plus some of the best intelligence and surveillance in the world.

What either side (Ukraine and Russia) is doing is incredibly difficult. Who knows how we would do if the tables were turned and Russia was feeding them as we attacked.

Neither Kyiv or Kharkov have been taken and both sides have been hitting each other hard. I think most people are confused because they picture the stuff they see in Hollywood as what war really looks like. It’s a grind for everyone involved. It’s hard to say because we’re very different from Russia in the way we approach war.

It depends..both the US and Russia can do it theory if civilians were not being considered.

But the cities they’ve been focusing on and just hit with Grad launches are filled with civilians. I get that they’re not carpet bombing but they’re definitely hitting population centers and residential areas. I am glad they are at least trying to somewhat be discriminant.
