Well it's two problems one those are sovereign countries recognized by the UN and two many of the former USSR are part of NATO. NATO is a mutual defense pact if he does attack a NATO country it would start a world war and we are part of NATO that means we have to go to war lol. If you attack one NATO ally you attack them all.
