They are playing good cop, bad cop the person on the chair getting fukked with is the american public the 99%.
As you can see Obama is the good cop and what will sell to most people, and Romneys camp is the bad guy.
Now on the off chance that the american people are stupid enough to vote for romney the powers that be will be saying " damn , we need to revise our estimates on the stupidity of the american public and the level of bullshyt they are willing to tolerate"
and in the next election the whole political scene will move further to the right with Romney's position becoming the new center.

there is also a limit to how much pain they are willing to take, the american public has been docile compared to other people politically and this is because of the illusion of the american dream.
