it's called "ride di riddem" it's a Danchehall Tradition dating back to the Dub days when Producers would produce an instrumental track, and a singer might wanna jump on it, then a toaster might be requested to do a version, next thing u know a singer wants to do a version of another song on it...
in a FRIENDLY COMPETION ting (thing) as a way to say Who can ride di riddem (the beat) Better...
this took place in the DANCEHALL, like a CIPHER, which influences the PASS DI MIC sessions in hip hop where everybody FREESTYLES OVER THE SAME BEAT....
Also it is the forerunner to the REMIX, where it's the same BEAT (RIDDEM) but different variations such as an added sound here, or soundeffect thier....
so keep in mind KING TUBBY (dancehall producer) is the FATHER OF THE "REMIX" not P. DIDDY
