I can tell that this is going to be a good show for the simple fact of how polarizing the characters are. A lot of people feel Micky is the star of the show and disregard Ray but the writing will cause the exact opposite by end of the season/start of next season.
It's just like Breaking Bad where from season to season, you're rooting for and hating someone different.
That's good writing.
Nah. This happens on nearly every serialized drama. As plotlines and character motives change, so do the audience's attitudes towards the characters.
Point is, not enough on the show is happening. There's no sense of urgency or imminent sense of danger. Last night's episode was the most boring so far. We still don't know why Ray hates his dad so much, made even more confusing by the fact Mickey was innocent of the crime he went to jail for. We don't know why the FBI agent has such a hard-on for Ray and his crew. Is Ray really that much of a bad guy? I think the writers confuse mystery with intrigue. We don't know much about Ray because he's a man of few words and he keeps everyone - colleagues and family - at an arm's length. So when Ray goes from leaving his stalker handcuffed in his bathroom to hitting it from the back later, I'm not left wondering why. I don't know enough about Ray or his motives to give a shyt.
The rest of the show just seems like shyt to fill the hour: Bunchie buying a crackhouse, the daughter hanging out with the black kid, the nurse lying to the trainer, the wife just moping about and looking through Ray's shyt. Something substantial better happen next week.
