I've only seen up to half of ep 6.

My take it is, going off the faded tattoo's, he is either a former bike or a card carrying member. I'm guessing the wife saved him from that life, she is dying, the family in debt to Corbin Bernsen character. So Pilgrim does the dirty jobs for him to pay off the debt.

Kind of reminds me of Kai from Banshee, with the self harming with the strap.
