I don't know if Japan actually actively devalues their currency, but China intentionally devalues their currency.

This effectively makes it (even) cheaper to manufacture goods in China than in countries that do not actively devalue their currency.

But its not very good for their citizens.

That's kind of the thing.. If the US wanted to devalue their currency they could.

Putting Tariffs on every country only works if tthe US has the divine right to be the reserve currency and maintain hegemonic power. If you put tariffs on productive countries that are meant to be your allies and you just force more trade between themselves until you get cut out where does that leave you. The problem is I think Trump is insane enough to take this approach to it's most extreme conclusion. MAGA cult willing to go down with the ship.
