This is a historically relevant piece, like Martin Buber’s “I-Thou” dialectic, here we have the locus classicus of ***** ***’s “Ain’t-I” dichotomy.

When I listen to this verse, I’m reminded of Derrida. The deconstructionist philosopher who questioned the existence of a transcendental signifier, and asserted that the meaning of a word could only be defined by how it deferred to other words in a web of meaning. *** seems to reflect this idea by constantly defining himself in reference to his material objects. Meanwhile, his everpresent existential self-doubt “ain’t I?” seems to be questioning the nature of reality itself. By questioning if he really exists, he’s asking if the universe itself isn’t just some grand illusion. On a deeper intertextual level, his Hegelian dialectic with the unnamed Trick is obviously a veiled allusion to Wittgensteinian language games. :obama:
