Fact-Checking Episode 6 of 'American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson'

Marcia

True or False: Clark and Darden swayed romantically to "That Lady."

Actually, weirdly, true. At least according to Darden. In his book In Contempt, the soulful prosecutor recounted the pair’s late nights, writing: “Usually, our evenings together didn't start until 10 P.M. or so and consisted of a few drinks after long days in court and in our offices. We'd stay up late, drinking wine.” As for the dancing, that seems to have taken place at Marcia’s house, not in the office. Darden writes about bringing his CD collection over one night (!!) and even name drops the Isley Brothers. Obviously, the press was all over it at the time.

1995 article From The Chicago Tribune:
Simpson Prosecutors Darden, Clark Reported To Marry

November 03, 1995

Marcia Clark denies it, but People magazine reports she and fellow O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden are planning to marry.

"According to a well-placed source, when Darden was asked recently about his future plans, he admitted that he's romantically involved with Clark and vowed that he `will marry Marcia' as soon as her divorce and custody battle is resolved," the magazine reported in an excerpt released late Thursday.

Clark was quoted by the New York Post as saying, "No, that's completely false. God knows where that one got started."

The People magazine story will appear in the Nov. 13 issue on sale next Monday.

The prosecutors have been given a year off after the grueling O.J. Simpson case, in which the former football star was acquitted Oct.3 on charges of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in June 1994.
