I think you’re still confused bc you responded about legal documents despite my example of mom buying the knife (which makes it hers) but the person taking the knife to use which is carrying bc now the person has ownership of the knife. I found a synonym of ownership though that should help you. Control. Replace ownership with its synonym control.

Whoever brought the weapon there was carrying as not only did they have illegal ownership(this one being used as bought), but they were in control of why it was present and responsible for it being present which = carrying. Someone snatching it from them while they’re trying to use it to stop them from using it does not equal carrying as they did not have control of or responsibility for why it was present (another way to say ownership).
