An underground Toronto rapper facing murder charges is considering representing himself at trial, taking to Reddit to ask the masses how this ill-advised plan could pan out.
Hassan Ali, known as Top5 in Toronto's underground rap scene, is charged in the January 2021 shooting death of 20-year-old Hashim Omar Hashi, in a case that has captivated Canadians with bizarre turns at every corner.
The rapper from North York's Lawrence Heights housing project was arrested in Windsor the day after the killing and placed on house arrest, but subsequently cut off his ankle bracelet and fled to California, triggering a manhunt.
Ali was later re-apprehended in October 2021 in Los Angeles, brought back to Canada and put behind bars. However, the controversy was reignited when the rapper
filmed a new music video from pre-trial lock-up in 2023.
The case took a new turn last week when Ali
posted to the LawCanada subreddit, asking if he had a shot at beating the case without a lawyer.
"I wasn't the shooter I was just present in the backseat while the shooting took place. Long story short they found some text from my friend who is incarcerated talking about the crime and indicated that I planned it so they upgraded my charges to murder," reads the post.
"What are the chances of me beating this case if I don't get a lawyer," asked Ali.
Over 50 people responded to Ali's post as of Monday morning, almost unanimously opposed to the rapper's idea of representing himself in court against murder charges.
One response reads, "lil bro you're risking life in prison to save a few thousands. JUST PAY A DAMN LAWYER."
Another commenter compared the question to a stage 4 cancer patient asking their odds of beating the disease without a doctor,
saying, "This is what you sound like."
Even before his arrest, Ali was no stranger to controversy. In 2020, the rapper drew criticism when he
shut down traffic on Highway 401 to shoot a music video — a stunt that drew angered responses from the general public and even
celebs like Keshia Chante.
