it's entirely mental in addition to her being physically inferior (regarding shotmaking ability, though this is true for 99% of the WTA compared to a healthy serena). she gets gifted a break on a couple of double faults and then gets broken to love right after. She's an example of one of the reasons women's sports are so hard to take seriously - an overwhelming lack of "grind it out" mental toughness/fortitude.
