I was asked to shoot a 1920s party next weekend. It's a three hour gig. I've shot parties before for friends but I never charged. I am not sure what I should be charging these folks. I was thinking 50 an hour. Any thoughts?
@Majestyx shoots a lot of events.

I'm shooting a Sweet 16 BDay party for a co-worker in April, it's 4 hours, I charged $400. I shot another event with this person last year also for the same price so.

You gotta factor in preparation and editing time too. Gear and software aint cheap either. I’d charge a bare minimum of $400. Dont sell yourself short.

And when you start charging your free shoot collab/TFP folk will start acting a lil different and most likely won’t be your clients in the future

How much is your time worth? Are you just going to shoot and hang around, or this work? How far is it from your place, do you have to drive, pay for parking? Do you have to edit photos, how long that take? I factor in all that shyt. If you just chillin, shooting $50 is cool. I don’t leave my house for less than $150 an hour. That shyt prolly bout to go up with inflation.

Tough call there. 100/hr probably starters to get up for an event. Usually charge around 125/hr with a 3hr min so it’s usually hits 450-500 with tips.

You could always charge less and shoot less and in turn edit less, but it’s probably best just to charge appropriately for your time (editing).

If it’s your first time shooting a paid event your also gonna need to think about whether you have enough spare batteries and speed light modifiers to work (might be black ceilings and you don’t want to shoot forward flash). Don’t take a loss for a gig.

I fully understand that photography is like 80% business, how you market yourself, and perception. But how exactly does one get to this point. $3,000 for a session that doesn’t include any photos

Ok, so this dude right here is 50% connections, 30% marketing and 20% skill. And I’m not saying he’s trash photogrpaher, it’s just that, anyone can light how he lights. But he been doing it mad long, he’d and ex model/wanna be actor. Used el for top clients then switched to headshots. So it’s like if a casting director sees your headshot and it look like you went to dude, then they think you serious about shyt cuz they know you dropped bread for that shyt. Having a style and already being plugged = bread in his pocket.

His high rate also encourages you to book one of his “crew” which he’s also getting a cut from.

Picked up a f100 after a gig yesterday. Figured this way I can keep a roll in my f3hp and one in my f100 and not feel rushed to kill off a roll.

Show up at the wedding with 4 interns spraying every angle and then just snap about 30 photos for posed shots and the first kiss :blessed:

I don’t know what this means lol. What’s free shoot collab/tfp?
Tfp = trade for pic. You just “collaborating” w/a model. Broad stands around and looks cute, like that’s a skill and you shoot and wear out your shutter. I ain’t never do that shyt with a jawn I didn’t already know. And then I started at least gettin some kind of compensation, most ‘models” ain’t models and don’t know how to do shyt outside of shyt they seen on IG

Oh yeah, Stir Fry don't play that shyt. Those people are also the types that will try to con you with the line, "Doing this for me will look great in your portfolio" lol :camby:

Yup
Only if I know the person I'll do it cheaply. Like I shot a wedding for 100 this year because the couple goes to my church I've known them for awhile and I know they had financial issues and the wedding was crazy small.

alot of big time photographers don't even edit their photos, they use retouchers :heh:
